OK, this is the plan:

When: Sunday, 18th June
Where: Phoenix Park, along the creek (directions to follow)
Time: Starting at 12 noon, bring a picnic lunch
Who: Callng all cavaliers and their owners; friends of same, canine or human, welcome too!

What we will be doing:

Mixing, talking, feeding treats, letting the dogs splash in the creek, going for a group walk, eating, hopefully enjoying some sun!

Special features:

Board members Tara and Lisa of Dog Training Ireland -- www.dogtrainingireland.ie -- will be with us and will do a fun group training lesson amd bring along a couple of the more portable pieces of agility equipment -- just to give dogs an idea of what agility is like and why your cavalier might enjoy a class! Jaspar might even demonstrate. I think they'll also do a Q&A and they can tell you more about their own training approach and their upcoming classes at their Dublin centre. They will have some soft harnesses, leads and collars for sale, probably some kongs and treat ball toys, and James Wellbeloved food.

Board member Fuzzie Bear (Lindsey) from www.poshpaws.ie and www.petbliss.ie should also be with us and will have some really posh delights available for dogs! She has Puppia harnesses and leads as well as other Puppia items, other collars and leads and nice things.

So bring some cash if you are interested in making some purchases; I think cheques are OK too. Prices from both are lower than any of the retail shops! :)

We might have a photographer who can do portraits.

Bring a lunch, some towels for damp dogs, rain gear just in case. You might want to bring something to sit on as there are no tables in that area.

If people will PM me their mobile phone numbers I can do a mass text message if due to bad weather we have to cancel. I will also post here. If it is just a bit showery we will likely go ahead anyway! :) But check the board before you head out the door.

Location -- if you enter the park from Parkgate Street (the entrance down near the river) you will pass the obelisk on your left and come to a roundabout. Go left at the roundabout (the obelisk will again be to your left) and follow the road around and down a slight hill. You will see a turn to the right -- take that and drive to the end where you can park. You will see a paved walk that is blocked to traffic and that is where you want to go, for about 50-100 yards or so. There's a creek to your left. Then you will see an open grassy area with a slope rising up on your left and the creek at its base -- that is where we are going to be.

I'll add a little map later on.

The reason I decided on this place is that the areas with picnic tables get too much car traffic and also the areas adjacent to them are currently closed to dogs except on lead as the deer are having fawns at this time of year. This area is next to parking but away from traffic and has a nice walk along the creek in the direction of the Papal Cross.

I should add, maybe let me know on this thread if you'll be there, too! It would be nice for people to see who will be coming along. But don't post your mobile number publicly -- send that to me privately. People don't have to send me a number either -- that's just in case you want a fast notification of any changes due to weather.

Hoping to be there with Zola and her cousin Picasso who we are minding for 3 weeks (the in-laws' B&T) while they are on holiday. I'm only saying hoping, as it is Father's day, otherwise I'd say I'd be there for definite!

Thanks for organising this Karlin. I obviously won't be able to bring Daisy Boo and have to wait and see if I can bring Twinkle. Twinkle has a laceration in her eye, she got something stuck in it while digging in the garden over the weekend. We have to go back to the vet with her again on Thursday so if everything is okay I hope to come along with her.

14th June 2006, 08:24 PM
Sounds like great fun Karlin. We'll be there with star. We're going to bring Ger's niece along with one of her new cav puppies - princess. The other little puppy, daisy, was attacked by one of her dad's hunting dogs and her jaw was broken. :(

Thankfully the vet managed to save her and they wired the jaw back together but l doubt little daisy will be making the trip this time. The poor little girl who owns her was devastated so this is the perfect opportunity to cheer her up. :)

14th June 2006, 08:47 PM
Won't know until Saturday if we can make it :(

The thought of having Cody in the same general area as food is quite daunting too, i'd probably end up having to sit on her

15th June 2006, 07:45 AM
:p i just hope my 3 dont let me down in front of thier teacher :D i can jsut imagine Cloe jumping on everyone

she will think all her birthdays have come at once!!

wee Max always tends to take teh back seat, bless him he sits there waiting for me to pet him when Cloe has had enoguh.... Lady have even pushed in ahead of him in the pecking order.....

Brave pup even tries to get above Cloe, but cloe stands firm and one swift growl puts lady back in her place!!! even we shake!!!!

Count me in for Sunday Karlin.
Looking forward to it.

Looks like the weather will be OK on the day, going by the advanced forecast so fingers crossed!

Now here is a map of where to go:

click here for map (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=53.353343,-6.314907&spn=0.018161,0.038066&t=h&om=1)

Following my previous directions:

1) come in the Parkgate Street entrance (bottom right corner) and head up Chesterfield Ave
2) at the roundabout, go left on Wellington Road
3) at the crossroads, turn right on to Kyber Rd. The only sign there will indicate it is not a through road
4) park in the parking area there. If it is full I am sure you can just park on the right hand side of the grass verge there
5) walk thru the posts that block cars from continuing along the pathway (it is still Kyber Road but the road is blocked to autos). About 50 yards along there's an open grassy area and that is where we will be.

17th June 2006, 07:30 AM
I wish i could come with Lady :| I hope you all have a really good day and take lots of :snap: . Have fun :rah:

17th June 2006, 05:50 PM
Have a wonderful time everyone, will be thinking of you all and can't wait to see the photos!!

17th June 2006, 06:07 PM
You'll be there in spirit!

I'm happy to add that we should have a photographer there to do portraits for people who might want them. This is Hilarie, owner of Sam the beagle, who has done many of Tara and Lisa's classes and is also a photographer.

We have some little jumps to set up for a mini agility try-out for all the dogs, plus some cones for anyone who wants to try and teach their dog the 'touch' command.

Tara and Lisa are promising to teach all the dogs the ever useful 'leave it' command! Also they will do a Q&A on training and behaviour issues.

For sale, there will be collars, harnesses and leads, some toys and treats, some small bags of food if anyone wants to try their cavalier in James Wellbeloved; plus some more nice things including Puppia harnesses coming from Posh Paws I hope!

Now fingers crossed we don;t get rain -- but do bring rain gear in case and also some towels as the dogs will likely want to splash around in the creek. Anyone who arrives more than three minutes after I get there will not see my gang looking lovely and clean but soggy and happy.

PS Jaspar's speciality is pulling sticks out of the creek and setting them on the grass.

17th June 2006, 06:10 PM
all excited for tomorrow, i think no one should wear white trousers or shorts!! i think all these angels jump up!!!!

Lady and Cloe got teh day wrong, they got in the car and refused to come out, should really of taken a photo...

i have told a few of my other cavalier friends to come also an di think we have 3 move babies coming with thier owners!!

17th June 2006, 06:13 PM
Great, the more the merrier.

17th June 2006, 11:58 PM
Rain predicted but we'll see how it looks by late morning. If it is a lot of rain we will cancel and do another weekend. If it is showery I'll probably go with the dogs anyway for a walk and anyone who wants to go for a walk can gather at the spot mentioned. :)

I'll make a judgement call and post here aound 11am!

18th June 2006, 12:10 AM
Hope it doesn't rain on y'alls fun day. Sounds like a lot of fun.

18th June 2006, 09:02 AM
It's not looking good... :(

Hi Karlin, just wondering if the phoenix park is going ahead, from where Im sitting its raining heavy outside??? Maybe on the other side of Dublin the sun is out??!!!!!!!

18th June 2006, 10:05 AM
It's just very light drizzle over here near the park but I think too awkward to try and do the full plans for today as the ground will be wet and showers are predicted. I'm going to cancel the formal get-together but am going to bring the dogs over for a walk at 12 at that meeting spot anyway, so anyone who wants to do a walk along the creek, that is where we will be.

We will try another weekend soon. I think given that we want to do some outdoor things together, it makes more sense to make a decision on a Wed or Thursday when there's some idea of the weekend weather.

It's a shame but as there's no covered area to go to in the park, we don't have many options.

18th June 2006, 10:05 AM
its dull and looks like rain but dogs sitting here with paws crossed it either pours now and gets it over wtih or holds off all together!

18th June 2006, 03:12 PM
We ended up with a nice group for the walk! The rain held off pretty much excpet for a little spatter at the very end so the dogs all got to socialise and we walked down to the end of the road and back -- lots of deer along the way so dogs mostly were kept on leads.

We had a few picture takers so might end up with pics to post. I just took a few at the end when there were just 5 cavaliers left -- we had about 10 to start. You can see my couple of pics below.

It's been fairly nice since then with even a bit of sun but would have been too damp to do much other than walk. We'll reschedule for the next few weeks.

My pics (I should have taken some when the whole group was there but forgot!!

Leo (back) and Lily (front) nice and wet from the creek and the damp grass:

Princess (puppy, in Leo's raincoat! No point in him wearing it as he was going in the creek anyway) and Star:

People and their dogs! To the right is Ger with Star (and Leo coming up from behind); and his young niece to the left with puppy Princess:

FInally Jaspar very happy as he's soaking wet and smelly, having rolled in some deer poops  :

We all thought we might make one day a month a cavalier walk day at the Park; then people can come or not come and can communicate here in advance. Maybe the first Sunday of every month, as that is easy to remember? It can be at noon or could be earlier or later.

18th June 2006, 04:10 PM
Great pics Karlin. Thanks for sharing. Glad the rain held off for a nice walk at least. Looks like a pretty area for the dogs to frolic and oh boy nice deer poop to roll in.

18th June 2006, 04:19 PM
When my alarm went off this morning it was raining steadily, we had planned on leaving at 10 as it's a 1.5 hour walk to the Castleknock gate but i think Cody would have objected fiercely to that amount of time in the rain

Sounds like a very good idea :p Such a pity about picnic, but next time we'll be there for walk, rain, hail or snow!!! Looks like it was a good walk in the Phoenix Park, pics are great, esp of Jasper  . We went for a walk in the nearby park, and Elliot too went for a long roll and swim in the muddiest/wettest ditch he could find, rolled in other stuff aswell, a very smelly little dog indeed:yuk:
