To those that love their dogs through sickness and health

This is not my work but one I found, at this time before Rudy's surgery it is appropriate.

From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog,"
or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog." They don't understand
the distance traveled, the time spent, or the costs involved for "just
a dog."

Some of my proudest moments have come about with
"just a dog." Many hours have passed and my only
company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and
in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me
comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand
phases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise."

"Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust,
and pure unbridled joy.

"Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that make
me a better person. Because of "just a dog" I will rise early, take
long walks and look longingly to the future. So for me and folks like me,
it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the
future, the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

"Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away
from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog" but
the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a man."
So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog." just smile, because
they "just don't understand."

To all my friends who know as I do.............

"They are Not Just a Dog".

that's beautiful, thanks.
i was with my daughter, her boyfriend and boyfriends' parents last week for the holiday, the parents' dog was at home being babysat by their daughter, the dog had to be supervised because she has been chewing her butt, they don't know why, she has an E collar and medication to be applied at regular intervals. We were talking about how having a dog is like having a kid, like how i t was when our kids were small, and joe's mom said "...It's better than kids because they like you all the time." i know what she means.

I couldn't agree more. In fact, those 'friends' who don't particularly like my dogs are made quite aware of the fact that the dogs live here and they don't!

I always think that those who don't like dogs are very sad people who don't know what they are missing out on :(

wow pam that's beautiful. It made me relate to my own life. I do rise early and walk longer for "just a dog," too. And I wouldn't change anything for it. It seems like when all hope is lost all I have to look at is "just a dog" and i'm instantly happy again. What a wonderful post. Thanks :) And by the way, how's Rudy?

Thanks for sharing that lovely piece, Pam. If you are a dog lover or love any animal for that matter, it is almost impossible to understand how someone can possibly think "it's just a dog." I wouldn't trade the time, energy or money spent on any of my animals for the world. How much joy a dog can bring you with just one look, we get such a return on our investment. Again, thanks for sharing.
