what people do for dog sitting

I'm just curious as to what people do with their dogs when they go away for a few days or a night or two....particularly those with more than one dog.
Thanks in advance,
Brid. :thnx:

Go away? You mean that people with more than one dog go away?

My son used to come and stay with the dogs. Now that he moved away (not because of the dogs   ), we are exploring the option of using a pet sitter.

I'm lucky enough that Robbie's breeder lives close and is willing to take him so he goes there..and Riley goes to one of 2 friend's house...since they both have some special needs and most of my friends have at least one dog of their own it is hard to ask them to take both.

When I go camping, don't matter how many days I go, I will take mine. If it is for something else, they go stay with my sister. She lives in the house I used to live in so it has a nice set up for dogs. Doggie door and all :D

Hi Guys.
I'm trying to find somewhere to send Holly when I go away at the end of the month for a week and a half. A friend is giving me a number of somewhere in Carrickmacross. it's €15 a day or €18 is you want them trained. They suggest leaving them for 2 weeks. I'll try them during the weekend. karlin, can you give me details for the Cindys Blanchardstown boarding. Brid, I'm still in Lucan if you're looking for someone to take her for the odd night or two.

I'd strongly advise PMing TKC on any place that claims to 'train' dogs and see if she is aware of the place and if it is known-- generally this is a real warning signal. No good trainer recommends a dog be left for training as then it only bonds to the trainer -- it needs to be the owner doing this work for any level of success and of the places I know that do this, most use ,ethods that would not be appropriate for a cavalier -- tends to be all correction-based training and at any rate, you cannot see what they actually do if you are not there at the time.

There are places that have all been recommended on www.irishanimals.ie -- I'd recommend checking there. Cindy's Home Boarding is listed there as well but is usually heavily booked in summer -- I reserve about two months in advance at busy times.

Happy Hounds in Meath is supposed to be good but is more normal boarding. Cindy's is inside, with Margaret who runs it; she only take a limited number of small dogs).

Thanks Karlin. I've pm'd TKC to ask them about this place I've heard of. I've also rang Cindy boarding and she's to get to me when she checks.
Thanks for the help.

If for some reason we can't take them with, my niece or my parent's watch them.

We have a petsitter who sleeps at our house. She leaves in the a.m. and checks in on them during the day then comes back in the evening to sleep here. We love her!!

Go away???? :yikes What's going away????

I have had quite a few dogs in my home on their hols as I don't like to see Cavaliers being boarded  However, Maxx has been to stay at Grandma's & my other friend Nicki's but now both of them will go to stay at Auntie Alison's if we ever go anywhere - if she'll have them ;)

In return Whitney and any other Cavaliers Alison might accumulate will stay at Auntie Donna's hotel like home

Somewhere in the distant past I seem to remember something they called "vacation". If I remember right it was quite enjoyable :|

That's one of the downsides to breeding. We have so many, we end up taking separate vacations or just stay home with the dogs. The closest we came lately was when we took a few extra days to go to the Duluth dog show and took 10 dogs with us; Kris's mom watched the other two for us. Don't know that we could trust anyone to watch all ours, seems we always have either puppies, someone pregnant, in season or about to come in season.

I get someone in..

an aupair usually, if i dont have one i get a friend to doggie sit.

with birds, dogs, hamsters fish and rabbits here its not easy to decided to go away!!!

Thanks for all the replies. It's interresting to see what everyone else does.
My friends slag me because they think I curtail my socialising because of Phoebe!!
Thanks Yvonne for the offer.
Brid. :D :D

Pah, just ignore them Brid. I get teased by some of my friends but they know how much my dogs mean to me and class them as my babies too.

In fact, when Maxx was poorly the other week and we ended up having to come back from Alison's in order for Maxx to see the Vet urgently, my mate and her hubby and kids gave up their evening at home to come and dog sit for me. She was as upset that Maxx was poorly as I was :flwr: When they had to go home to put the kids to bed (which was about 30 mins before we arrived home), her hubby was so worried about leaving the dogs alone that he wanted to take them home with him

I do have a 'friend' who mocks me but then she is rather an unhappy person and has few friends which I find quite sad.

where do the little darlings go?????

ANTEE DONAZ's house with Maxx and Charlie
:lotsaluv: :lotsaluv: :lotsaluv:

A big thank you to Donna xxx for always looking after them so well.

Alison, wilts, U.k.

Ah but what you don't know is that I let them sit around and watch violent films on tv and eat bad things, smoke and drink alcohol whilst you're not around    ;)

Dear Brid,

When I lived in the city, I spoiled my dogs rotten. When they are puppies (Merry & Pippin), I hated to leave them at home, so I dropped them off a doggy day care, while I am at work. The doggy day care would even take them home to their house at night, if I had to go out of town. That all ended in April 2005.

I bought my parents home & my sister, me and my parents all live in the same house out in the country. Since my parents are retired, they are home with the dogs during the day. If I go on vacation, the dogs are with my family. The 3 dogs are all adults and are little trouble and lots of love and companionship for our family.

Now I am looking at getting a puppy in September and I didn't want my parents to do the puppy training. They are retired and they didn't choose to have all these dogs, I did and it is my responsibility. So I asked my dog groomer out here in the country if she would watch the puppy while I am at work. She said yes. She breeds Yorkies and has 7 dogs of her own, so she said it would be little trouble to take the puppy while I am at work. That way my parents can enjoy their retirement and just love the puppy, not train it. Then when I am not working, I will be home with the puppy and working on his education.

Well, vacation now sounds just absolutely crazy now that I will have 4 dogs. I hated to burden my family with the responsibility. Then just last weekend, my best friend called me and told me that she is going to pet sit to make extra income. I trust her with my pets and it is a perfect solution for me for my future vacations. I don't want my dogs to be something that my family dreads and they say that the dogs really miss me and are not as good when I am not home. So my friend, who has a Corgi named Babe, will pet sit at her own house, when I am out of town.

Everything fell into place. Perfect! And the dogs are loved and with people almost all the time.
