How to clean dog wee from carpet?

The Cocker did a wee on the landing at top of stairs. :sl*p: My own fault - I allowed her up the stairs (they love to "escape" out of the kitchen, bolt up the stairs as fast as possible, and scramble back down as soon as I call them back) and left her play around there for too long.

I was rushing out the door at the time and just put a few dry towels on top and soaked up as much of it as I could. I am now back and carpet is dry. No stain is visible. However, I want to clean it properly.

So, any suggestions as to how I should clean the carpet (80% wool)?

I have a Johnson's cleaning to remove stain and odour.... can't remember the name.

Usually recommend a solution of biological detergent...but no cleaners with pine or ammonia in as this encourages them to go back to the same spot.

There are various specialist products available from the pet shop too.

I would just mix some washing powder and luke warm water and dab the stain with a white cloth. I have a beige carpet and managed to remove a sick stain this way.....

You need to use a cleaner that will get rid of any odor otherwise the dog will smell it and will be tempted to remark that area. Like jeni, I also use Nature's Miracle cleaner and it removes the spot AND odors.

Me too. i've been using it for years with the cat, and now with zack. It contains enzymes that break down the molecules of the bad stuff and eliminate the stain and the odor. the company says that if you can still smell the odor after using it, then the cleaner was not able to reach all of the smelly stuff. they advise saturating with it. and also buying a blacklight which can then show if there's still urine or whatever there, i got a blacklight, after my cat's UTI caused major damage to the carpet, drapes and etc. i took love seat cushions to a professional cleaner to be cleaned with enzymes. Natures Miracle is not the only brand. it's the only name i know,l but i've seen others at the pet store. Highly recommended. I just recently got their laundry detergent, haven't tried it yet.

They don't have Nature's Miracle over here but any pet shop will have a stain and odour remover that is an enzymatic cleaner -- I use one in a big yellow container by Four Paws. You want to make sure you are not getting a cleaner (eg for kennels) but something that can be used on carpets.

Regular detergent will not work to break down the scent -- if you want to try a homemade remedy, you need to use biological washing powder and this can be used in a weak solution. Nonbiological powder, Fairy liquid etc will only mask the scent. It is important to use the proper cleaner as if the wee isn't broken down chemically it can rot the fibres, can still stain, and also the dog may go in the same place again as their keen sense of smell can tell that's where they went before.

I have even used the Four Paws successfully on handmade, vegetable dyed persian rugs with no problem. I first blot up as much urine as possible with white paper towels (those printed ones can stain!) -- using the heels of my hands to really press down and lift the damp. Then I carefully soak the rug/carpet with the cleaner. I blot up any really excessive amounts of liquid if any. If it's a rug, I put something underneath to lift the rug from the floor to helop it dry. You can follow the directions on the container at this point.

I've had no stains at all using this method with kittens and puppies and the occasional wee-enthusiastic rescue. I normally roll up the Persian rugs if there's a foster around or kittens in the house but sometimes, accidents still happen. I always have a bottle of the Four paws stuff in the house. PS It is worth getting the large, not the small bottle. :lol:

I had some cleaner that was supposed to work miracles, when Max was being housetrained his favourite 'wee' place was on the landing, the stains are still there despite numerous scrubbings. could never find a cleaner tough enough. Thankfully with our house almost finished being renovated I will finally be able to throw out the smelly old thing and replace with something other than cream (what was I thinking of)!!

I have a bissell spotlifter and love it. When I found a wet patch I would spray it and suck it all up into the spotlifter and then soak the area with Nature's Miracle. It's worked great.

I swear by Nature's Miracle also, works awsum on new old and even stains not by pets...
