My beutiful little 18 month tri-color Faith developed seizures on wednesday morning which progressed to paralysis on thursday before her little heart gave out. The neurologist(Dr. Glass)said he suspects a case of disseminated autoimmune encephalits. My heart is broken! Has anyone else heard of this? The only info I can get talks about a disease named granulomatousmeningioencephalitis(GME) affecting toy, purebred dogs primarily female. There is no known cause and the progosis is poor. I await the results of an autopsy to give me some answers. Thankfuly our 6 yr. old blenum is well and is acting ok. Glenn

I have not heard of it, but my heart is breaking for you. I cannot even imagine what a horrible shock it must have been and what you are going through now. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you deal with your loss. *ng*l

i'm so sorry. what a terrible illness, whatever it was. I hope you get some answers, and some comfort.

Glenn,

I am so sorry for your loss, made harder as your baby was so very young too.

I've just found a web page about encephalitis if it's any help...

http://209.51.156.117/Encephalitis.htm

It contains the following info ....

Encephalomyelitis
Inflammation of both the brain and the spinal cord. Encephalomyelitis can be caused by a variety of conditions that lead to inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. Among the common causes of encephalomyelitis are viruses which infect the nervous system. One type of encephalomyelitis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, occurs most commonly after an acute viral infection such as measles (rubeola) and is due to be an autoimmune attack upon the nervous system.

There are also some other pages on the subject at.....

A few web pages seem to speak of it occuring after a vaccination :(

Whatever caused it, my heart breaks for you. I hope you find some answers for Faith. Take time to let the pain heal & try to remember the joy and happiness she gave you in her short time on this Earth.

Take care and stay with us :flwr:

I am so, so sorry -- what a tragedy; this must have been very hard for you.

I don't know anything about encephalitis, but I would suggest your vet/neurologist might also want to consider syringomyelia and episodic falling syndrome as both are also known conditions within the breed. Your vet may be familiar with these conditions and have eliminated them as possibilities but many won't know of either within the breed. Both can cause severe seizures and both can come on very suddenly in severe cases.

Episodic Falling: www.cavalierepisodicfalling.com

I hope you find the reason for her sudden and sad death.

I was thinking along the SM lines as well, it might be worth mentioning to your vet Glenn.

I am so very, very, sorry for your loss, I cannot imagine your grief. So young to be taken from you.

Keep your memories close to your heart, and take care of yourself right now... you have had an awful shock, we are all here for you, anytime.

So sorry for your loss Glenn. Sounds like this was very sudden which makes it all the more heartbreaking. And such a young girl. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'm so sorry for your loss--what a shock for you. :(

Please let us know what the autopsy turns up.

Well wishes and prayers to you...

I'm sorry for your loss, Glenn, what a shock to lose her at such a young age. I hope the vet can determine what happened to your little one. :flwr:
