View Full Version : How old is your cav(s) and how much do they wiegh

29th October 2006, 02:09 AM
I just want to see the size and age range of all the cavs haning out on cavalier talk.

Brady is a little over 6 months and he's about 11lbs

29th October 2006, 02:15 AM
Robbie is a year old and 16.6 pounds

29th October 2006, 02:17 AM
Kosmo is a little fatty!! He apparently is still having growth spurts! :yikes

He stayed at 12 lbs for over 2 months and then all of a sudden.. WHAM! I took him in Thursday and he was at 13.4!

29th October 2006, 02:32 AM
zack suddenly started putting on weight too in the past month. Sounds like he and Robbie are twins. zack is a year old this month, and he weighed a little over 16 pounds when i weighed him about a week ago.

About a week or two before that, he weighed 15.0 pounds, so that was a quick weight gain. A few weeks before that, he had weighed less than 14.5 pounds for months, for about 6 or 7 months, his weight didn't change, it just stayed a little over 14 pounds.

With him gaining weight this month, i've reduced his food portions a little. It may be he gained weight because for about 3 weeks, i was mixing Stella and Chewys freeze dried raw meat patties in with his Evo--the patties have a high fat content. he loved it but i've stopped it due to the weight gain. He still visibly goes in at the waist and all i can feel is muscle and bone, no fat, but he looks thicker overall and i don't want him ending up overweight.

also, in the past month, i have not been taking him to the dog park, only twice. I was taking him several times a week but due to life circumstances, i have stopped. he just gets an hour a day walk now.

By the way, at the pet store, they told me Innova Evo now has a low fat version, about half the fat of their regular kind. But they didn't carry it in the size i need. i'm going to have them order a bag for me, they will take it back and give a refund if he doesn't like it.

Kingston will be 6 months old on November 3, and he weighs 11 pounds beautiful pounds!

29th October 2006, 02:54 AM
At his last vet visit - a couple of days past 18 weeks Lucky was 12 lbs. Definitely not overweight though, just a long lean body and long legs!

29th October 2006, 03:46 AM
Brady is a pretty long and tall guy too. Maybe he was a doxie in another life! (except the being tall part, just long :p )

Cupcake Love
29th October 2006, 04:55 AM
Cupcake is 13 months old and a petite 10 lbs. Nacho, on the other hand, is 9 months old and a roly-poly 16 lbs. :p

29th October 2006, 05:18 AM
Pixie's almost 2 1/2 and weighs in around 16 pounds. We've gotten her weight down about 2 pounds since last year (she gained a bit both before and right after her patella surgery.) I'd like to see her down another pound or 2.

29th October 2006, 06:59 AM
Berna is 16 wks and weighs just over 10 pounds-- is that normal?

Harry & Heidi's mom
29th October 2006, 07:46 AM
Harry is 18 months old and weighs a whopping 20.5Lb!

He's not overweight, but is a big cavalier, twice the size of his mother!!

29th October 2006, 07:53 AM
Popped her over to the vets for the scales yesterday..age 3yrs and spayed....17.8 pounds, and thats after saying goodbye to a "Spare layer" since we brought her home in June !!!

I like her at this weight, she has a "Shape" and "Waist" and I can feel her ribs through her coat easily, she walks miles every day...a fit little girl :lotsaluv:

Alison, Wilts, U.K.

29th October 2006, 12:55 PM
Merlin is 20 months and weighs 19 pounds - he is top end of the UK standard

Oakley is 11 weeks and weighs 8 pounds ( just weighed him now) - he doesn't look fat - you can feel his ribs - i think he is going to be heavy boned ;)

29th October 2006, 01:43 PM
Maxx is 7 and 13.5kg. He's a very big Cavalier and tbh there's not that much of him - I can feel his ribs and the Vet is happy with him :) He's more like a large Springer than a Cavalier but both his parents are big dogs too

Charlie is 3 in March & weighs about 11kg now. He was 10kg when we got him and James (Vet) said he needed to gain a little as he really was skinny :( now that he's eating a proper diet he's gained a little but only enough to be healthy.

Both my boys are really fit (except for Maxx's SM & PSOM & Charlie's allergies) and can walk miles & do on a regular basis :D

29th October 2006, 02:34 PM
Misha is 10 and weighs 21lbs, a big boy! He's at a healthy weight though.

Merlin is 14wks and weighs 5.2lbs, up from 3.4lbs at 10wks.

29th October 2006, 02:36 PM
Max is almost a year old (nov 28th) and he is about 22 lbs... big boy i guess, although he isnt fat, just bigger all over.

murphy's mum
29th October 2006, 02:55 PM
Murphy is 8 months and weighs 17 pounds. He's all legs at the moments but he got just the right covering over his ribs. He feels a lot heavier when you pick him up for a cuddle though1

29th October 2006, 03:01 PM
Spencer is 15 months and is 14 lbs 7 oz. Izzy is 10 months and weighs 11 lbs. I've got some skinny kids!

29th October 2006, 06:15 PM
Corgan is 7 1/2 months old and has weighed 14.5 pounds for several weeks now. We hope he doesn't get bigger than 18 pounds or so, but are guessing he'll get up to 20. :) Of course, we'll love him even if he's a healthy 30 pounds! ;)

29th October 2006, 07:28 PM
Gus is almost 5 (next month) and weighs 9.5 kilos he's an average size cavalier.

Pippin is 2 and 9mths next saturday and weighs 7.5 kilos he is a small cavalier.

Gus could do with losing a little bit ,although it's hard to tell as he has a heavy coat, pippin seems fine but needs to stay that way so I feed both of them on a light food now.

29th October 2006, 07:29 PM
Riley is 10 months and 17 pounds. He is a big boy, always was. He's not fat at all, you can easily feel his ribs and he has a nice defined waist, but he's kinda tall and long, "lanky" i think is the right description. He'll probably end up about 20 pounds i think.

I was gald to see some big size cavaliers as I think Barney must go in a grow-bag at night bacause he is so big not fat but long legs long body and everthing else as well but I would not charge him he is ten mouths old and the vet say he is just right in weight for how big he is---Aileen

29th October 2006, 07:58 PM
SiânE is eight years old and a very healthy (well the vet said so) 12 kg, to think when she first came to stay she only weight 7.5 kg.

molly+charlies mum
29th October 2006, 10:45 PM
molly is 3 now and weighs 7.8kg she is a small cavalier but cute with it ,charlie is 22months and weighs 9kg so still not a big cavalier but is a nice shape....

29th October 2006, 10:54 PM
molly is 3 now and weighs 7.8kg she is a small cavalier but cute with it ,charlie is 22months and weighs 9kg so still not a big cavalier but is a nice shape....

My largest female cavalier weighs almost 7.7 kilos--so Molly is not small. Small is my lil 10 month old that weighs 5.5 kilos.

30th October 2006, 12:38 AM
Jaspar: 16.5lbs, turns three next week
Leo: 14.5lbs, turned three a couple of weeks ago
Lily: 13lbs, somewhere between 1 and 2

30th October 2006, 01:46 AM
Wow Karlin - you really got Lily down!!! Way to go!

30th October 2006, 07:01 AM
well i last checked Milo when i went over to the vet with him two days ago...he's 5.6 kg which i think is a bit over 12 pounds..and he's 11 months old..
and Monty im not quite sure..hvnt checked in some time but i'm assuming from size that he is a little less than Milo and he is also 11 months

30th October 2006, 09:20 AM
Tandie (age 3 or 4) is a whippet-like 14 and a half pounds! We all thought she'd filled out a little since we got her two weeks ago until she was weighed Saturday night and hasn't put up an ounce. Must check her again because I'm guessing after all that cooked heart and cheese and doggie cookies at training the scales might be telling a different story this morning ;)

30th October 2006, 09:24 AM
Charlies 19 weeks tommorow and weighs 5 kilos, is that normal????
He seems to be all legs at the moment though!!
His head still seems too small for his body, when will it catch up?

Barbara Nixon
30th October 2006, 09:55 AM
Wait for it ...

Monty, nearly 11. 35lbs, despite being very thin ( i think our two have Rose mullion of ottermouth in common, Donna and Ruth said he was big)

Izzy, 9, still 21 lbs, despite being skin and bone (He has always weighed heavier than he looks, being the heaviest in his litter, but the same size as the others)

Joly, 3, 23lbs (He could lose a little, but is not really fat)

Teddy, 3, 23lbs (He is just right for his wide beamed frame).

30th October 2006, 05:57 PM
Chloe at not quite 11 weeks weighed just under 5 pounds.(2 kg)

Holly I don't know for sure- stupidly didn't ask the vet for the exact figure, but I'd estimate she's somewhere around 5 kilos, which makes her around the region of 11 pounds. Given her small frame, I'd say that's about right, especially since the vet commented that she was very much on the low end in terms of Cavalier weight, and not to let her lose any more or she'd be too thin. I think he thought I was trying to make her grow bigger as he said that at this age she wouldn't grow any more. :D :D

30th October 2006, 10:19 PM
Bella was five on 25th October, she weighs just under 17 lbs. she is very fit.
I don't bathe her very often as she is very much a house dog, and when we have been walking in the mud and sludge I just rinse down her paws etc and she looks good as new in no time.
She is a strong healthy girlie, who often takes me for walks.

Ps. How do I get a pic of her up here?

30th October 2006, 10:26 PM
Duncan topped out (hopefully) at 21 lbs when he was a year, but we are working on him. He is SO furry I thought it was all fur but the waist test told me the vet was indeed right and 4-5 lbs needed to come off. We are boarding them next weekend so I will find out more then.

Arthur is all skin and bones. He was 9 lbs at 4 months and I know he is bigger so I am going to guess 11 lbs at 6 months. We go for his neutering on Friday so I guess we will know more then.

At what age do Cavs grow the most???

31st October 2006, 01:15 AM
The first week of life-- smile

Orla -- there's directions on posting pics in the Getting Started section at the top of the board.

Cherrise is 7 month and is 7 lb .. is she small .. ?

That is undersized for her age though it really depends on the litter size and so on -- if the litter was large, the puppies are smaller but eventually catch up. If the litter is small often the puppies are larger but all even out at the end. Be sure your vet knows about the typical size for a cavalier as singificantly undersized dogs need to be watched a little more carefully to make sure there isn't an underlying medical problem. She could very well end up around the bottom of breed standard or just below; I'd guess she will go to at least 10lbs, maybe on up to 12-13... they can still fill out until they are about two and she could well put on several pounds in the coming months. If she stays below 10lbs and isn;t growing much in the coming weeks, that would concern me a bit and in that case, I'd definitely want to have a vet really check her out. What size were her parents? Presumably you saw them both and have info on her background from the breeder? I'd contact the breeder to see if she knows about her siblings' sizes perhaps and to get more info on the parent sizes. She may just be a smallie! :) Be sure to get her spayed though if she stays small -- any pregnancy could be a risk in a smaller than normal dog and this is a breed that can have difficulty as it is. You wouldn;t want to risk anything along those lines.

Some dogs of course will naturally fall outside the breed standard of 13-18 lbs (12 lbs in the UK) so some variation up and down is perfectly normal and fine, but smaller cavaliers in particular shouldn;t be bred if they are undersized as there's a greater potential for passing along health issues when you dip below breed standards -- making any breed smaller than it should be risks bone and other problems. No good breeder will breed for small cavaliers deliberately and that should be a red flag for anyone, and is worth mentioning on a long thread about adult sizes of cavaliers. Unfortunately there's a growing market for 'teacup cavaliers' -- which don't exist -- they tend to be backyard breeders breeding undersized dogs and runts together, which already have a disposition towards health problems. :x

This thread explains more on how to roughly gauge adult size:

Shelby is 3 years old and weighs 19 lbs (should could stand to lose 1 to 1.5 lbs)

Jake is 4 years old and weigs 24 lbs...Perfect for his frame...he is very tall but has a wonderful figure.

31st October 2006, 11:06 AM
Wow Cathy, the kids are even much the same size!!! Sophie 3, is 18lbs and Lottie 4, who is taller, weighs 21lbs. :)

Jean Grant, who is involved in one of the northern England rescues, told me that most of the rescues in that area are big dogs. it was certainly true of the ones at their charity show.last year. I had Joly and Teddy with me and many of the dogs were bigger than them.

Here are my boys on the day

India, age 3, 17-18 lbs
Geordie, age 3, 18-19 lbs
Chocolate, age 4, 17-18 lbs

They all have waistlines, too! :)

Oooh lovely pic! Most of the cavaliers I get into rescue are large boys, too. :) The more to hug!

Daisy's Mom
31st October 2006, 02:32 PM
Daisy is 6 months old and 14 pounds. She's pretty tall and seems the right weight for her frame (to me). She has a waist, but she has filled out a lot over the last month. Maybe too many treats -- she does love her treats! We are in puppy kindergarten, and working on obedience skills, so she has been getting more treats than before. She has kind of cut herself back a little on her regular food lately. I used to give her 1/2 cup in the morning and the same in the evening, but now she usually leaves about a third of that in the bowl.

Oooh lovely pic! Most of the cavaliers I get into rescue are large boys, too. :) The more to hug!

That's what I say about Maxx, all the more to hug  His parents are both large dogs and his Dad is even bigger than him

31st October 2006, 08:00 PM
That is undersized for her age though it really depends on the litter size and so on

i agree that she's small.. she has 2 other siblings, i didn't get to see the siblings because her breeder actually wanted to keep her but at the end decided to let her go, so i got her slightly ltr, she was 14 weeks already.. ( i don't know if the breeder lied bout her age though! she's CKC reg'd, not sure that proves her bday to be right.. :S )
Her dad , is really pretty, a tri-color champion and pretty small for a boy! i think bout 14 lb.. her mom is not too big either bout 12 lb i think.

I did some research before getting her .. read bout Cavaliers books and looked up reputable breeder .. and wanted a smaller cavalier ( small as in acceptable sizes not tea cup etc.. ) I liked her mom's size , that's why i got Cher.. i weighed her last night just to make sure her weight , and it was 7.4 lb .. yeah maybe she's going to be around 10-11 ? people has been asking me " How come Cher hasnt grown much ? " that's when i started to get worried .. haha she hasnt got any medical prob yet, 3 trips to the vet, vet says perfectly fine. She threw up quite a lil this past few weeks , just because i think, she ate and ran too much right after .. :xfngr: crossing my fingers that she's not one of the smaller ones that gets medical prob! :S wish me luck!

Freckles is at 21.8 lbs. He's lanky.

1st November 2006, 03:35 AM
Miles is 8 months and 11.2 pounds. People tell me that he's very skinny but he's getting longer and taller! I hope he doesn't get too big. When will they stop growing?

14th November 2006, 04:02 PM
I just weighed my boys, I knew Dudley had gained weight but not this much he is now officially being cut back.

Darby is almost 8 months old he weighs 14 lbs which I think is fine.

Dudley will be 3 in January he weighs 17.8 lbs :yikes :yikes :yikes which is too much for him I would like to see him around 15 lbs. So I will need to work on this throughout the winter.

14th November 2006, 04:26 PM
Oh Linda I think Darby has just caught up with Kosmo!! I keep thinking "kosmo must be almost done growing?!" but he keeps going and going!! It's weird becaues I don't see him putting any meat on his bones and I don't think he's growing physically, but i guess it's hard to tell because i see him every day. I don't know where all that extra weight is going!! :yikes :yikes Soon Kosmo is going to be like 20lbs!!!

14th November 2006, 05:46 PM
An update on the boys weight...

Duncan at nearly 20 months is down to 18.5 lbs from 21 in July (YEA!!!) I think chasing baby brother has helped along with cutting back on portions.

Arthur at nearly 7 months is 10.5 lbs...I swear he gets longer and taller daily. Maybe now that he is neutered he will fill out some. It think he will be smaller than Dunc as his parents were 14 and 15 lbs.

14th November 2006, 06:01 PM

Kos was the exact same weight as Duncan when he was that age!! Maybe we'll have twins! :flwr:

14th November 2006, 07:42 PM
Bishop is 15lbs at 17 months (has weighed 15lbs for past two months now). Everyone is surprised to hear he weighs that much because he seems small, but we walk a lot, so he's muscular and loves to eat!
