1 1/2 Year Old Male Cavalier

Hi, I am the proud owner of a 1 1/2 year old male Blenheim Cavalier named Louis. We adopted him from a breeder when he was 6 weeks old. He still is not fully potty trained and is very hard to dicipline. Are Cavaliers just stubborn? We had him in puppy pre-school at 6 months old but that didn't seem to help. Does anyone have some advice?

Welcome! Always good to see another southerner aboard!

Now that you've joined, you may want to post your question in the Showing/Training forum. I'm sure you'll be flooded with great advice since there are many seasoned Cavalier owners here who have helped me tremendously. Visit and see if some of your pup's problems have already been discussed: http://www.cavaliertalk.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=14 .The earliest I've ever had a breeder release a pup to me is 12 weeks. It sounds like Louis may have needed more time with his mom, but I'm sure that happens often and there are ways to overcome that.

Do you crate train? That has worked for me and seems to be a pretty successful training method. Karlin has compiled some wonderful training information. Check out these links:

I LOVE photos, so post one of Louis if possible. :flwr:

Welcome. 6 weeks was way to young for this little guy to be adopted. You are probably going to have ongoing issues as he wasn't able to be properly taught how to do things by his mom. I think dogs in general can seem stubborn, but our trainer explained that it's not so much being stubborn as much as not understanding what you expect. Mic gave some really good threads to look at.

Hello and welcome! I am just up the road from you in Chattanooga! :D

In my non-professional opinion, I think it depends on the dog itself, not just the breed. My 2 are polar opposites. Spencer is willing to do anything, and Izzy is as stubborn as a mule!

Great to have you here! :flwr:

Hi there! Welcome to you and Louis! :)
It sounds like you have already received some good advice. If you have more questions, you should feel free to keep asking!
Have fun! :dogwlk:
