• If you're a past member of the board, but can't recall your password any more, you don't need to set up a new account (unless you wish to). How much tearing eyes is excessive

Lily's eyes seem to run a lot. One more than the other. It is always very wet under her eye. I bought some pads to wipe the stain under her eyes, but they don't seem to be working. Is this something I should be worried about or is this normal?
 
Shouldn't be a problem. Our little Cooper has blocked tear ducts and needs regular wiping. If you see your vet they can put some dye in the eyes and check the extent of blocking. That's what they did with Cooper.
 
Colbys eyes tear alot too. I went to a CKCSC show last weekend and did the eye clinic with Opthamologist Dr Carter . Colby's inner eyelid is causing the probelm. It rolls inward when he blinks and causes irritation and thus tearing. He said to watch it over the next 4 months ( he wants his head to develop more) and if he doesnt outgrow it he will need surgery on both eyes. If he wouldnt get the surgery he could get eye infections,corneal abrasions and could go blind. So i will be waiting until April to see what happens and if he is still teraing he will have the surgery which he said is minor ........they just tack down those inner eyelids . Anyway, this condition is called Entropian.

Lily may not have the same thing of course, but this is what is going on with Colby ;)
 
Roxannne, sorry to hear that Colby has entropian. Hope his head shape ends up making the surgery unnecessary. :xfngr:

Puppies generally seem to be more teary than a lot of adults and what the eye specialist says is interesting because it matches Laura Lang's opinion that in puppies the skull doesn't fit the eyes really well, causing more tearing, but that often this goes away by adulthood.

That was the case for me -- by 18 months neither Jaspar nor Leo had any troublesome tearing though both had discoloration when younger. I used to wipe their eyes regularly with damp cotton pads (carefully!) and now rarely have to bother. As an added bonus, Lily licks Leo's eyes all the time so I don't have to keep them clean myself any longer. :lol: Jaspar hasn't had staining in well over a year now.
 
Thanks all....Well that's good news, hopefully it is something she will grow out of, or just a puppy thing like Karlin said.

I'm glad you mentioned this- Holly has always been quite teary; next time she's at the vet I'll mention it. Her eyes often seem runnier first thing and she seems to like rubbing them after she's been sleeping, but never at any other time. I've been meaning to ask about the licking because Amber seems to love licking Holly's eyes- which she amazingly tolerates- and I wasn't sure if it would hurt Amber, but I guess not!
 
I hope Lily is soon better and I hope Colby's head develops so that he doesn't need the surgery.

If he does then don't panic! My friend Kim used to have a gorgeous black Lab called Simba that was going to be destroyed as a pup because the breeder couldn't sell him as he had such bad entropian :yikes

Kim rescued him and paid for the operation he needed. When he came out after the surgery he looked really scary with red 'slits' under his eyes and loads of little stitches everywhere. These soon healed though and within 2 weeks of surgery you would never believe anything had been wrong with him :D

He went to the Bridge a very elderly man about a year ago but had a very happy and extremely healthy life after his op :flwr:

Hope this might settle your fears a little & put your mind at rest over the op if he needs it.

I noticed on another post that you mentioned Lily is teething. It is common for a puppies eyes to water a bit more while they are teething. Poor thing :( Teething is such a difficult process.
 
Oh Wow....Thanks guys, one less thing for me to worry about. I haven't been a puppy Mom in 13 years, so you forget. I dont remember my Lhasa tearing while teething, but Lhasa's normally aren't a teary breed as a rule.
 
I hope they'll outgrow their tearing problems!

One more thing about entropian - rather than actual surgery, there is a laser procedure available as well.

India had entropian which she didn't outgrow, so our vet used the laser on the edges of her eyelids. It made quite a difference, as she finally stopped rubbing her eyes; I had been so concerned she'd harm her corneas. :flwr:
