View Full Version : PSOM or SM??

How can you tell the difference between PSOM and SM without an MRI??
The symptoms seem to overlap or be very similar.
Isn't there some way other than expensive or invasive ways to tell??

A vet can scope a dog (put a scope down the ears) to see if the tympanum is bulging outwards which often indicates a bad case of PSOM. But dogs can still have PSOM without it being able to be seen (the case with both of mine). Generally the dog needs to be put under for that type of scope exam, I believe, though a specialists might be able to spot the problem on a regular exam. An MRI is a definite way of seeing PSOM as it shows up as a white blob in the ear area.
Ohio State Univ. has been doing an ongoing study on PSOM with one goal being a less invasive way of diagnosing it.
My mother was told by her vet that she didn't have the right equipment for examining the ears for PSOM so to me sounds like you need a specialist for this. Maybe someone else knows more (Rory's mom probably does as she's a vet student!).

Karlin, do you know who is running the study at Ohio State or if it's still open? Tx.

You'd need to contact them directly.
