View Full Version : Additional steps for MVD dog, Gizmo

Thought I'd try the collective wisdom of the group again. My 10 year old cavalier, Gizmo, has pretty much end stage MVD. He is on:

vetmedin - two capsules, 2x/day
enalapril - 1.5 tablets, 2x/day
lasix - .5 tablets, 3x/day
thyroid meds (i don't remember the name) .5 tablets, 2x/day
theophylline - .5 tables, 2x/day (this just started about three weeks ago)

His blood work, which was done just before he started the theophylline was fine.

He went on the theophylline because he was coughing and gagging a lot. It did help. This has been reduced. He's back to eating well; he had gone off food for a while..

Now, however, he has started coughing a bit more (no where near as much as he was) and his chest is just heaving, both with breaths and his heartbeat. I don't think he is in pain but he doesn't look comfortable.

Are there any common meds added at this point that I should bring up with his vets. His medical situation is complicated a bit because his regular cardiologist is ill and his regular vet is the one I would talk to. She is very receptive to suggestions which is why I'm asking here for advice.

I'm not looking for a miracle but just to buy some additional reasonable quality time for him. Appreciate any help you could give me.

So sorry to hear this Margaret :flwr: :flwr:

The only other heart drug I can think of is Fortekor...not sure if you can get that?

It might be worth posting on the specialist MVD list, run by Anita - there are people on there with extensive experience of MVD, and they might be able to help.

I hope you manage to get Gizmo a bit more comfortable again - it is very hard to get the balance of the drugs right.

Thanks for suggesting this. I am on that list and had posted a message there also. Probably "incorrect" internet etiquette to post same message on several related boards, but I'm interested in getting as much information as I can.

no don't worry Margaret...as much input as possible...

Sorry didn't realise you were already a member, I get the daily download and it didn't arrive until after I'd posted on here...

My experience of MVD was fairly limited, so I'm hoping others will see and reply to you...

Sorry to hear that Gizmo is not feeling well. :flwr: :flwr:

Our beloved Charley had MVD and I'd be glad to discuss it with you, if you could pm me. :)

Sorry to hear Gizmo is poorly. My Charlie also has pretty advanced MVD - I think he's on fewer drugs than Gizmo though. He's on Vetmedin, frusemide (diuretic), and fortekor. He's also on Vivitonin, but not directly to treat the heart (I don't think).

Hope Gizmo is feeling more comfortable soon,
