Well, she arrived yesterday and seems sweet as can be. Her name is Princess and is approximately 9 weeks old. Were so glad we made this decision. We spent a significant amount of time learning about the breed, the breeders, the Lancaster, PA (USA) Puppy mills and so much more. We found a wonderful breeder in Malvern, PA (USA).

Much to our suprise, she slept 9 hours her first night. After having her for nearly 24 hours, it seems like we are close to having her use her wee wee pad exclusively. It's too cold and snowy out, here to start her outside. Will get to that in March.

She sleeps quite a bit. I have read much on this forum about there laziness. Guess it's true but it also works well with my work from home business.

I myself own a Mobile Pet Grooming business in the US. Not a franchise, just a small 2 unit van business right now. It's a lot of fun. I do not groom as I have two very good professional groomers working for me.

We do hope for state level legislation to deal with the Lancaster Puppy mills. Since we did our homework, we did not get caught up into this. Unfortunately, one of my clients did.

Anyway, I am looking forward to getting more information from this forum and contributing my experiences where relevant.

Welcome to the board!! Glad you did your research and are aware of puppy mills. Princess is the perfect name!!

Welcome! I'm only new here, but I've been treated so nicely and I'm sure you will be too.

Princess sounds wonderful. Can't wait to see pics of the pretty puppy.

Welcome :flwr: . Princess, what a cute old-fashioned name. Love it!!

Puppies sleep alot. Give her about 2 weeks to really show you who she is. She will change significantly. She will have lots of energy, but will still sleep alot until she's about 4-5 months old. Cavaliers have a lot of energy and love to run around and play hard. My Scout is 10 1/2 months old. I've just been throught it, and still going through it.

She loves to curl up in my lap for snooze. If I'm working around the house and she's tired, she will follow me around looking up at me. As soon as I sit down, boom, right up in my lap for a snooze. She was just waiting for me to sit down. They are so cute. They are really great little dogs. Good Luck and enjoy your little Princess.

Nice to meet you! I'm fairly new at pix, but I'm learning. And if this old dog can learn a new trick so can you!

Neither of my Cavs have ever been as active as the people on this board talk about theirs being. A difference in breeding in one; the other was a puppy mill rescue. Mine do not play and never have. They are simply princesses and prefer to spend their time lying around.

Looking forward to getting to know you both.

Update on our new Cavalier

Well, first I want to thank everyone for the warm welcome.

Unfortunately, we got some bad news this morning that has devistated us. Our new puppy has Polycystic Kidney Disease. Were really not sure what we are going to do at this point. In just a short time she has become a wonderful member of the family. I think we are going to have to come to the realization that the most humane thing to do is put her down.

Fortunately, the Breeder is very involved and supportive. As this is an inherited disease, she needs to have the other three siblings examined for the same problem. Stay tuned for next steps. :(

Oh, I am so sorry. I don't know much about this disease, but I am just heart sick for you. Please let us know how you are doing. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. :flwr:

Unfortunately, the news is not good for our new Princess. We had a specialist do an additional ultasound test today and discovered that both kidney's are concurrently mult-cystic and in a degenerative stage. He does not believe a low protein/low phosphorus diet will help all that much and gives the puppy 1 to 2 years of life.

While not common amoung Cavalier's, this is a heriditary disease brought on by both the mother and father being carriers. This has also been devastating to the breeder, who now has to have both dogs altered. If only one of the parents were carriers, then the pups would become carriers. Additionally, it is possible that the litter mates may at some point develop this disease down the road.

The Breeder has been very accomodating, including paying for all of the bills at this point. She has offered us the following options:

1) Replacing the puppy with another from the same litter.
2) Refunding all of our money, whether we keep the puppy or not.
3) Giving us another puppy and letting us keep this puppy.

The complication we have as a family is that we have all fallen completely for this puppy, especially my 8 year old daughter. Yet, keeping her will require a significant amount of attention as the disease progresses and then dealing with the loss afterwords. Although she has been doing ok, she may have difficulting controlling her urine elmination.

Has anybody on this forum had a CKCS or other breed in this or similar situation and if so, any advice?

Sorry the news wasn't better.

OH, my, I am just catching your thread and I am so sorry to hear your sad news about your new puppy. How devastated you must be. :(

That said, it sounds like you have a responsible breeder and I'm happy to hear she is not continuing to breed the parents of your puppy given the situation, and that she has offered you a new puppy if you want one.

Cavaliers are such wonderful dogs and it must be so heartbreaking to have to contend with what you are dealing with ... I cannot even imagine.

If you do decide to get another puppy eventually from your breeder and take her up on her offer, I hope you'll consider getting vet insurance. I don't sell it or have any vested interest in it, but I bought it for my own dog to provide some peace of mind after reading about the other genetic health issues that impact the breed. It won't help you for your current puppy, but you might want to do a search on Pet Insurance for some useful threads on this board if you decide to get another puppy.

Good luck and I'm so sorry about your sad news. :(

I was completely heartsick last night when I read about what has happened to you and your puppy. I can't tell you how sorry I am for you and your family...what a difficult decision you have in front of you. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. I know you will do what is best for all concerned.

I am so so sorry to hear your news. I know nothing about that disease, but I'm new on this forum too and have discovered that people are very helpful and knowledgable here. I'm sure someone will know how best to advise you. I just wanted to add my deepest sympathy for you and your family as you make this difficult decision.
