Eye Problems

Hello friends! Ive been absent for a while but I'm back...with a Frodo issue

I'm pretty sure this topic has been covered a couple times before so I apologize for the repeat question.

Every once in a while one of Frodo's eyes will stay closed like its irritated and bothering him, and theres a little bit of disharge. Well today its both of his eyes! Hes very afraid of people touching his head when he's like this, and he ducks away. I can tell they are bothering him!

Does anyone know of any ways to soothe eyes for them when this happens? I tried a washcloth with cool water, but he didnt like that at all. I just feel so bad for him and dont want him to be in pain. And its so sad that he doesnt want us to pet him right now because he LOVES attention.

Broken record here, but whenever a dog's eyes are involved it is very important that you get them to your veterinarian. This isn't something that you want to use a home remedy on. Some medications can make what ever is wrong worse, so you need a professional to evaluate the situation and determine the correct course of treatment.

Your dog only has two eyes. It's very important to take care of them.

Don't mean to sound harsh - but this is territory that you don't want to "wait and see" about. At the very least call your vet. (Maybe I'm a bit paranoid because one of my dogs only has one eye.)

That doesn't sound harsh, I understand. We have asked our vet about it before, because we were scared by it when we first got him. But I think our vet lacks knowledge about cavaliers because she said it was either just allergies or he somehow bumped one of his eyes on something. Im afraid my parents wont switch Vets either, because the one we have is across the street from our house and we have been going there for 17 years now. :bang:

Im not sure what else to do :cry*ing:
It usually clears up in a day or two but I just hate that he is in discomfort.

My Minnie had the same problem about a week ago. I took her to the Vet and he checked for scratches etc. He found a tiny ulcer and prescribed drops. After two days there was no improvement so I took her back again and he prescribed an ointment. She still wasn't better so I took her back a third time and I'm sure he thought I was crazy but, like Crittercall says "they only have two eyes" This time he sedated her and using a tweezers, he lifted out the inside lining (think it's the third eyelid??) :yikes
but again, found nothing. He said the ulcer had healed and he did a dry eye test. Her eye was a bit dry so now I am using Natural Tears and today her eye is back to normal :jump: I'm glad I persisted with the Vet and Minnie is back to her old self icon_devil

I would find yourself a Vet who is willing to listen to you and explore every avenue in order to cure your dog.

ask your vet to do a test for dry eye ..........just to make sure the ducts are working fully

Also check for entropion -- where eyelashes may be growing inward and scratching the eye. This can cause very serious problems over time, as can any ulcers or dry eye -- so it is really, really important to have a vet thoroughly check for all these problems. It is much better to get a second opinion from a different vet now then to pay to remedy serious damage done to eyes later on -- believe me. This is definitely something you need to check as it is not normal for a dog's eyes to be stuck shut in this way -- sounds like very heavy discharge and a significant degree of pain for him to be so fearful of being touched. You can also go to vet eye specialists for a thorough exam.

You don't need a vet familiar with cavaliers but you do need a vet familiar with eye complications.

Would it help if you showed some of the responses here to your parents? Your vet should understand if you want a second opinion. It doesn't mean that you won't be seeing them ever again; it just shows that you are really concerned about Frodo's eyes.

It's sometimes hard for people to justify the cost of treatment for a dog. Some generations don't even think that their pets should go to the doctor for anything at all. But Frodo is special and hopefully this is something that can be cleared up quickly with the correct medication. Some of the more extreme problems can require surgery, but my fingers are crossed for you that this isn't one of those cases.

I will definitely be taking him to a vet. I didnt realize there were so many possible causes. :sl*p: and Dangerous ones at that!
