Eye Troubles-UPDATED AFTER RECHECK

I haven't posted about this because I thought is would be nothing. About 3 weeks ago Arthur was holding is eye about half closed and scratching at it. I took him to our vet and she said there was no scratch in the eye (we were worried about sand b/c we had been to the beach) SHe gave me some drops that she hoped would clear up the problem. He has been moderatly better but occasionally gets his lazy eye again.

Then last night, I noticed a foggy, glassy spot in the upper corner of his eye. Of course, I panic - My puppy is going blind! - and that drams was likely caused by my after work margarita (or 2).

Hubby called the vet this morning and they said it sounds like an ulcer. Phew!!! Does anyone have any experience with this...can they do damage...what is the treatment?

Arthur is going to the vet at noon for the afternoon..They will work him in to their schedule and I will pick him up at 5.

I am so sorry, I don't know anything about ulcers in dogs.

Please keep us posted on how he is doing, give him a cuddle from me and the boys.

Minnie-May had an ulcer on her eye - cleared up in a week with antibiotic drops. We were referred to a specialist vet to have her checked for any eye problems including Entropian. She was thoroughly checked and no sign of any entropian was found - she must have just run into a bush chasing birds too quickly and caught a twig or something. :oops:
 
We've had experience with corneal punctures and scratches. The vets usually put them on a pain killer drop and a antibiotic. The sooner you treat it the better.
 
I posted a link somewhere in the health section on a similar question recently. It really depends on if it was caused by an accident or is caused by a chronic condition. If a scratch or something similar caused it it can be easily treated with drops and should clear.

But ulcers can be caused by ingrowing eyelashes that are permanently scratching the cornea, in which case the eyelashes are usually surigcally removed. A dry eye (which can have several causes) can also cause ulcers as the eye isn;t being lubricated adequately. If the problem doesn;t go away with simple treatment or keeps recurring they will want to look for other causes or refer you to an eye specialist.
 
I need my own emoticon that says "See your Vet", but you're already doing that so I wouldn't need it then.

Let's be positive and think that is a simple ulcer which can be treated with some drops. Worst case scenarios are out there but for today let's not think about them! 8)
 
Most likely it is something minor and he'll be his old self in a couple of days of drops. :)
 
Sorry, my husband decided this was a good time to install Vista on our machine at home so I have not had a computer.

It is an ulcer and we were given a pain eyedrop to be given once a day and an ointment to be given 4 times a day to heal the ulcer.
(Please take the time to imagine putting ointment in a squirmy dogs eye)

The vet wants to see him on Tuesday to make sure it is healing and they don't need to put him under and agitate the sides of the ulcer to get it to heal. Here's to hoping the medicine will do the trick.

It's good to know that it is something that only needs medication.

Speaking of the squirmy dog - I think that's why my dogs gravitate to Bubba instead of me sometimes. If anything of that sort has to be done I'm the one who gets to do it because I have more "experience". In other words, I get a grip on them and don't let go until I've done what needs to be done. :D Mean old Mama!!

Poor Arthur. I've heard corneal ulcers are quite painful. Anyway, sounds like you have it under control. Heal swiftly Arthur. :hug:
 
One of my male cav's went blind at around 5 years of age, vet was unsure as to why. No infection or ulcer. Later diagnosed a cataract. Back then cataract removal was not what it is now so it was left. However he lived past 14 years and still had a good life. He knew our home and garden well and functioned as a seeing eye dog. He just needed more care when walking as he would walk into things and had trouble with kerb and guttering. We trained him to step up or step down and he enjoyed his walks.

I hope Arthur's eye is soon better. Maxx had several ulcers on his eye after being gouged by a cat. They all healed up with vet treatment though and he was fine after a few months. We did at one time think he was going to lose his eye but thankfully the vet he saw was also an eye surgeon and so he was very lucky.

We went back for our recheck today.....

After treatment for the last 5 days, his eye is no better. No better, no worse. They have given us a stronger antibiotic, taken us off the pain medicine and want to see him again Friday.

I just want my little man to be better (and to stop paying $100 every 5 days for medicine and exams - thank god for my puppy emergency fund)
 
Poor little Arthur, I hope his eye soon heals up. Can you see an eye specialist if it doesn't heal? I would ask your Vet to refer you if it is no better next week.
