Cathryn's mention of Tasha's accident reminded me of Joly's mum, Daisy. It does appear we were lucky to have him:
Daisy was the only puppy in her mum, Josie's, last litter. Beyond feeding and cleaning Josie didn't treat Daisy the way she'd treated her previous puppies (Perhaps she couldn't understand one puppy as she had two large litters before), so her breeder was desparate that Daisy learn to be a propper dog.
Being unabe to locate anyone with a suitable cavalier litter, she asked the local dogs' home if they had a small puppy that would be a companion for Daisy. They said that they had, but did mention a risk of the puppy, being of unknown origin, passing on a disease. However, as the puppy seemed healthy, it was thought a lesser risk for Daisy, than not being mentally stable.
However, when the puppy was produced, he turned out to be a huge labrador type, almost as big as Josie, never mind Daisy. Not wanting to disappoint the rescue, the breeder's aunt adopted the puppy and he was allowed to come to play occasionally, while Daisy had to learn to be a dog from the breeder's other girls.
Some months later, the breeder and her husband, had some of the dogs, including Daisy, out in the park and were standing atop a bank, when Aunty arrived with her crew,three cavaliers and the big boy. He wasn't well trained and pulled loose, running up the bank towards Daisy.
He was going so fast that he caught poor Daisy under her chin and rendered her unconscious. Neither her breeder, nor her husband, nurse and paramedic, could rouse Daisy and they thought all was lost as they rushed her to the vet, who, obviously had some success, eventually.
She's fine , now, though, when she had her first vaccination, all seemed well until she was back home. There her face swelled and she had difficulty breathing, so back to the vet. Of all the breeder's girls she is the only one ever to have an allergic reaction to the vaccine.
Then to cap this, when she was due to whelp, Aunty, mentioned above, was staying with her, being given instructions to ring Sharon, as soon as labour started. However, things happened very quickly and as the first puppy emerged, Daisy panicked and fled under a bed, killing the puppy , in the process. Luckily, Sharon got there in time to see Joly and his sister born.
