New member - eye problems and myron twitching...any info or help please

Hello eveyone, I am new to Cavaliertalk so you will need to bear with me. I have a tri colour called oliver, he is almost 7 and is very cuddly. I have just picked up on the web that the trouble he has been having with his eyes could be dry eye, also he has a very curly coat, I am very dissapointed that my vet has not noticed. Also my puppy of 8mts Bertie a belnheim who has had invasive juvenile cataracts removed from both eys, and is now having a constant twitch in his body, my vet thought it was a liver shunt but after 2 Bio acid tests he was said to be fine, however I asked for a second opinion, I saw a neurologist on Tuesday who advised me it could be a myron twitch, he is going for an MRI scan on the 26th June so hopefully we will know then, he has been on Rimadyl, and pred forte before he had his eye op, and it was after he had taken that for 3 days that he developed this twitch, I first thought it was hic cups, I mentioned to my vet but he dismissed it, only when I went with regards to him not eating that I saw a vet nurse, who when she Oh Bertie have you got the hiccups, I said he has been like that for 6 weeks, it was only then that they did the liver shunt test, I would dearly appreciate any help or advise that can be given to me, This message may be a bit jumble, ao I apologise, many thanks joan, oliver and bertie , and my 3 fluffies(cats) Buster Tabby and Zoe

First icon_welcome to the board. This is a fantastic place for those of us who are cav mad!!

I'm so sorry to hear that both of your fur babies are unwell at present. You're clearly, and understandably, very concerned about them both. I'm afraid I have no words of wisdom, you've done everything I would suggest: namely, seeing the vet, asking for a second opinion and booking the MRI for Bertie. As for Oliver I would maybe consider mentioning your concerns re dry eye etc to the vet, to draw his attention to the issue if you feel he has missed this. I'm sure there will be many people here who can offer you some much more helpful advice, I just wanted to say hi and to say that as far as my limited knowledge extends, I think you're on the right track. :flwr:

Many thanks Nicki for all your help getting me started on the forum,I havent had many replies, however it is early days. Bertie is eating a little better, he is still twitching all the time, wish it was 26th june for his MRI scan, Have you any tips I can use for oliver with him having a moderate dry eye, and curly coat syndrome, I have been using the ointment from vet and natural tear drops, any help would be greatly appreciated. Hi. Welcome! Poor babies! What do you feed your cavvies? Mine had eye problems...skin problems...weight problems....i changed their diets and within 6 months, WHEW...never healthier, happier, and havent been to the vet in 2 years, except for shots.

Hello Gwynny, Thanks for oyur message. I feed both dogs on Caesar with Hills dry food, they used to be fed twice a day but at breakfast time wouldnt eat it, so they now have toast for breaky then a dental stick at mid day, then main meal around 6pm, I have tried various different dog meals, ie bakers complete puppy, Eukanuba, Iams but for some reason will not eat after a few weeks on this, they have raw carrots regular and vege mixed in with their food, any help re my 2 babies, with regard to diet would be great, regards Joan , Bertie, oliover, buster tabby and Zoe

We've had dogs with allsorts of neurological disorders but I've not heard of myron twitch

Is there another name for Myron twitch? It does seem to be neurological ( in it's manifestations) and you are on the right track with your specialist consultation. I hope you are able to get a definitive diagnosis from the MRI and the treatment is not complicated. The brain is still mysterious even in humans. Best of luck to you and Bertie as you wait for the MRI. I'm sure you are very worried about your little guy. It doesn't appear that any members, as yet, have information about this particular problem-but, hang tight waiting for responses b'cuz there are a lot of well informed forum members.

I have looked in several of my library of vet medicine books and can't find anything called Myron Twitch. I've Googled it without good results. I'm bumfuzzled!!

My oldest girl has micro-opthalmia and we use a sterile lubricant ointment for the eye on her. It seems to make the eye more comfortable. I bought her at Target but am sure it would be available at other places. Works better for her than the artificial tears did.

I changed my crew over to Eagle Pack at the first of the year and they love it. I give them the dry w/just a bit of canned. I'm not one of those who feeds a huge assortment of different foods ,veggies, etc. IMO, the more you do that the more trouble you have getting them to eat the food that is made for them with the proper things needed for good health.

Am looking forward to learning more about the twitch.

It was stated that it was a Myronic Twitch, I jave spoken to Margaret Carter who advised it sounds like a form of epilepsy,, also other symtoms he is having could relate to SM, so hopefully the MRI will settle my mind and get Bertie back on to track,have you come up with any sort of tremors which go throughout the body, it seems to be a little like a hic-cup. many thanks Joan

Hi, Thanks for the messgae, If you read my reply to Critterall, you will see that it could be a form of epilepsy,I will do my best to try the sterile lubricant, and will ask the opthallologist when I take Bertie back for a further check up after his both eye operations for cataracts,havent heard of Eagle pack over here in england, may go under another name.will keep you to date as to how Bertie and Oliver progress. Please do, Joan. I sympathize with you for having to go through all of this (plus the dogs 'cause you can't explain anything to them) and I know that there are times you think you may just be going crazy.

But I'll admit that I'm also interested in the medical aspect of it. Take the woman out of the vet clinic, but you can't make her stop learning. Your first description sounded like a form of epilepsy to me - but it isn't right to go throwing out a diagnosis when I'm not a doctor and don't see your baby.
