how do i manage walking 1+ dogs?

now i have the joy of having bluebell as well as daisy, i am struggling on walking them both at the same time. today i very nearly fell over, it was quite embarrassing!!! am i just going to have to walk them when george is home so that he can have 1 and i can have 1?? not sure what else to do, currently i have them on extendable leads which they like. unless i walk them seperately but thats a bit of a shame really...
 
I just have two 6 foot leashes. If we have a problem crossing, I move one on each side. I don't have problems until we got the third dog. I only walk dogs when we have a destination, so the short leashes keep them close and "on task". fwiw, Sandy
 
In my opinion, walking is over-rated. If you have a big garden (didn't you say something to that effect?) and plenty of toys, play fetch with them instead. They'll almost certainly enjoy it as much if not more, and solves the problem of walking. Besides, surely at Bluebell's age she shouldn't be doing much walking on pavements anyway, but a little running around on grass probably wouldn't hurt her. And you can make it fun by hiding the toys/treats and watching them race around trying to find them. In addition, it's probably going to be MUCH easier to train Bluebell to walk nicely if you walk her by herself and then you can give her your full attention.
 
I sometimes walk 4 at once but no way could I manage more than one flexi lead.

Try them on normal leads & give them time to settle into a routine.
 
I walk my 3 adult boys together on standard 6 foot leads, they have worked out their own order, Logan HAS to be closest to me, whilst Chips and Nico swap about a bit, the leads get a little twisted but nothing serious!
Your 2 are young yet, they will sort themselves out as time goes by just be prepared to do a "John Wayne" style walk for a while! :lol:
 
I have a coupler that is stretchy and it is the best thing I have ever purchased!! It tires out my athlete boys and puts no pressure on my arm or wrist. It's called the crazycoupl'r. They ship internationally too, but it costs extra ;)

I find it helpful to train each dog, individually, to walk with a loose lead. Once each dog knows proper leash behavior, then you can put them together.

Cedar and Willow would walk with both on my left side, with Cedar, the leader, closest to me.

Holly is still learning to walk on a lead, so she hasn't gone for a 3 dog walk, yet. She gets her exercise out in the yard for the time being. Once she is better on leash, I will try all three on the left, which I suspect won't work well; Cedar and Holly would probably fit of the "next to mom" spot. What I imagine will happen will Cedar and Willow on the left, Holly next to me on the right. I'll let you know if my predictions come true!
 
I recently purchased the Sporn Double Dog lead. It is fully adjustable so one dog can have more length in his lead to the other if necessary. I love it!

I think its much easier to walk two dogs on regular 6 ft. leashes rather than the retractable ones. That gives them too much freedom and its easier to get them tangled up. I use a regular leash even when I am just walking Oliver by himself because I feel like I have more control than with the retractable leash. I also got him the Sense-ible harness and it works great!

That coupler looks great. Did you buy the leash as well or do you use your own leash. Also what size did you buy? Thanks :D
 
I used to walk four and the only problem was that Teddy walked much further than the others, by weaving, so plaited the leads into one thick one.

Joly is good on the lead , but Teddy is still a runabout, so I use a 6 foot lead (not a flexi-I don't like those-too many injuries caused by them) with hooks on either end, which I hold one third along, so the dogs take turns on being near to me or in front. Nerest to me gets less freedom, but more attention. When I need more control eg passing another dog, person or interesting object, they get equal length, one on either side of me (lead across my tummy with a hand about 2 feet from each dog).
 
Barbara where did you get a lead with clips on both ends? That sounds interesting.
 
it was quite hard walking 2 at first for us ( soon have to get used to walking 3 at once!!) but we are quite lucky as soon as you get to the end of the row of houses that we stay on there is a lovely great big park for the dogs to run!, jake loves playing with the tennis ball there and lucy just loves stealing it from him!!!!:dogwlk: :dogwlk:

The crazy coupler is really excellent. I have the size large leash (which is really for labs but my 22lb cavalier pulls like one!!) and the size small coupler. These were the only sizes they had in my local boutique so I went for it. You don't have to use the stretchy leash, a regular one works just as well, but I really love this leash. The small coupler looks tiny when you have it on them, but it is a TOUGH cookie and is really durable. Finally, I don't look like this anymore walking two dogs at once: :dogwlk:
People laugh when they see them because the boys will try to run in different directions and they bounce back into each other. :lol: That only happens once though, then they get the picture.
