I read this in my local paper tonight

09:30 - 17 July 2007

Vets had to amputate a dog's leg after the animal was dumped in the back of a removal van.

The RSPCA is appealing for information after the black and tan terrier was discovered in Leicester Street, Long Eaton.

It is thought the dog was left in the van while the removal team was inside the house.

It had a badly injured leg, which had been put in a splint home-made from two bamboo sticks, a medical lint pad and bandage.

RSPCA inspector Helen Mead was called to collect the terrier, which they called Basil. Vets were unable to save the damaged leg.

Ms Mead said: "We think Basil's owner took the opportunity to dump him when they realised the home-made splint wasn't working.

"We're not sure how long he'd had the injury, but he was in considerable pain and had clearly received no proper treatment."

The dog was found at 11.30am last Thursday. Anyone with information should contact the RSPCA in confidence on 0870 5555 999.
