• If you're a past member of the board, but can't recall your password any more, you don't need to set up a new account (unless you wish to). As long as you recall your old login name, you can log in with that user name then select 'forgot password' and the board will email you at your registration email, to let you reset your password.

Hi everyone,

I'm an old member from last year who has had a rather busy 12 mths (moved house, moved jobs, death in family etc etc). I'd like to apologise for not using the board and keeping in touch, and hope that I'll be welcomed back again. I don't hardly recognise any of the members now, so I feel like a total newbie. (be gentle with me everyone).
I have a ruby girl called Maisie who is now at the ripe old age of 19mths and is an absoulute sweetheart. We're off for our first visit to our potential new addition to the family tomorrow. A little 4 wk old blenheim boy!!!!! I don't know why I said potential, because I know that we'll all fall in love with him as soon as we see him.
Looking forward to hearing and swapping stories with you all again,

Hey, good to see you again, and as you can see we changed appearance slightly too in that time and grew a lot too! :) I can't believe Maisie is that grown up now. Can't wait for some pics of the potential new addition... :dogwlk: Is there a Manx breeder or do you have to go all the way over to the 'mainland'?
 
Fortunately there is a Manx lady who on first impressions (all be it on the phone) seems to be a "proper" breeder. Nevertheless, I have my little notepad with all my questions on to ask her tomorrow. She has both the mum and dad, and told me that she is a licensed breeder. She also warned me of another lady who breeds cavaliers over here who is apparently not so good. Gggrrr,they get everywhere!! She was also very inquisitive on my situation, and asked if I had small children because they can be rough, what hours I worked, etc etc.
She was also exited to hear that I had a ruby because she was under the impression that there weren't any over here, although I have seen one. (must've been what we call over here a "comeover")
Can't wait untill 1030 tomorrow now to see what he's like. Is there any breeders licence or certificate I should ask to see when I get there??

Firstly icon_welcome back to the boards!! Maisie looks a total sweetheart :lotsaluv:

To answer your question there is no real certificate I know of other than maybe one to say that she is a member of the Kennel club Accredited Breeders Scheme, sadly an awful lot of the "farmers" have joined this scheme to give themselves "credibility" so to speak.

The only other licence I can think of is from the local council, this is basically issued to people who regularly breed MORE than 4 litters in a year, I personnally do not have one as I have never had more than 3 litters in any one year, I breed for myself first and NOT to fill a waiting list.
It might be worth asking your vet if he has heard of either of these breeders, both the one you are visiting and the one she warned about and what his experience is of both of them, you will be wanting to hear that he rarely see's them other than for annual check ups, this would indicate strong healthy stock.

Obviously you will want to see both parents, don't expect Mum to be look her best, I have a 4 week old litter myself and Momma is dropping all her coat right now, this is perfectly normal, but they do look somewhat "motheaten" when they have/are nursed/nursing a litter! However parents should look clean and healthy and the breeder should happily produce any and all paperwork you ask for if she owns both of them, these are the registrations for both parents so you can ascertain that they actually do belong to her, you will want to see a clear eye certificate for both parents, this does not have to be current but they should have had this test done when around 1-2 years old, this does not have to be done annually as once they are shown to be clear these conditions will NOT come on over time. More importantly a current clear heart certificate preferably issued by a cardiologist and NOT a local vet, if parents are under 5 these MUST be clear however over the age of 5 it is acceptable to breed from dogs with MILD Murmurs if they are of sufficient quality to further the line.

The puppies should be clean, however at 4 weeks old their little personalities are only just starting to show, they will also be going through the start of weaning so their coats may look a bit greasy from the change in diet. I have to say that the VERY youngest I would ever allow any-one to view my babies is 6 weeks, their immune systems are still underdeveloped.

I hope this gives you a few pointers, also ask to see as many family members as possible, this will give you an idea of the overall temperament of this ladies dogs and also the final adult size.

Thanks Cathryn, I'm now re-writing my list of questions for the lady after reading your post. I'm very lucky living on such a small island where everyone knows everyone elses business, so if I'm unsure tomorrow I can easily find out about her. Hark at me sounding like some kind of private investigator!

As for sounding like a Private Investigator in a way you are, hopefully this little pup will be a part of your family for very many years to come, you are merely making sure that this breeder has done all she can to ensure the very best start in life for these babies. If she says her dogs don't need to be tested or cannot produce heart certificates for the parents then walk away no matter how perfect the puppies may be! I am proud of my dogs health certificates and offer them up for inspection freely!

Good Luck with the "Interrogation"!! She has asked lots about you and your situation, now it's your turn to "grill" her!! ;) ;) :D :D
 
Hi everyone,

Well, I went to visit my potential new pup today but have organised another visit next week as there were a few things I wasn't particularly happy about. The lady seemed lovely on arrival, escorted us into her house and told us to wait a moment. She brought in the puppy all by himself and let us get aquainted. Althought my heart was melting at the sight of him, my brain switched on and started to ask the lady questions. I asked to see the mum and the other 3 pups to which she replied "the mum is very tired and the puppies are a bit young to cope with too many visits". She said I can come back next week and see the whole family when the mum is less tired and the pups are slightly older. I then asked to see all relevant documentation to which she replied "I'm still in the middle of sorting it all out but it will be ready in the next week or so". I hope that I am just being paranoid because of all the bad breeders around, and that next week the lady will come up trumps with all the neccessary answers that I need. My instinct is telling me however, that something just wasn't right so guess I'll just have to wait till next week to find out. Does anyone know of any breeders who know anything about breeders on the Isle of Man??? I was hoping that somewhere on this board, someone might know of a cavalier owner/breeder over here on the isle of man who might put me wise to this lady.
He was absolutely beautiful, so I have my fingers crossed that I'm just paranoid.:xfngr:

Hmm, OK I hope that this is just paranoia as well, but this litter is at a similar age to my own and Momma Crystal is certainly not too tired to meet people, in fact she is glad of the break as the pups now have very sharp teeth and are only just getting going on solids! Agree at 4 weeks pups still very young and should NOT be being handled by too many strangers at this point from a potential risk of infection point of view, but she could have carried them in and allowed you to view them from her arms, that is hardly taxing! Makes me wonder how many viewings she has allowed so far?

Paperwork, OK can take a little organisation but if not ready when you next view puppy would make a point that you want to see it before placing a deposit on the puppy.

You can PM me this ladies name and address if you like and I can look her up to see if she is a member of the Parent Club for you?

Like I said, hope this is just paranoia speaking! :xfngr:
