For anyone who lives in the area, they are doing free micro-chipping at the Atlanta Humane Society on Saturday from 11:00-2:00.
I get their email newsletter and this was in it!

On August 18, 2007, the Atlanta Humane Society will host a free micro-chip clinic in honor of its new President, Carl Leveridge. Pet owners are invited to stop by the Society and get their pet micro-chipped for free. Micro-chipping is a gentle, easy way to make sure if your pet is ever lost that he or she can be safely returned.
WHERE: Atlanta Humane Society Clinic
981 Howell Mill Road, NW
Atlanta, GA 30318
Corner of 10th St. and Howell Mill-entrance to Clinic is off Edgehill
WHEN: Saturday, August 18, 2007
11:00 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Other festivities include an upscale yard sale, a pet first aid class (this class will be from 8am to 5pm and requires pre-registration--call 404.875.2600 ext. 261 for details), and a grand opening of the Atlanta Humane Society new dog kennels and spay & neuter surgery suite.
WHY: A micro-chip ensures that your pet always has identification. Collars and tags can become loose and fall off when a pet escapes from a fence or gets away from its owner. A microchip remains with your pet at all times. It is the size of a grain of rice and is inserted the same way an animal gets a vaccination. It is a quick, easy process for the pet. Once the microchip is inserted, the pet will be registered online with 24PetWatch. Shelters and vets are able to use scanners to identify lost pets brought to their facility. If the pet is microchipped, a number will appear in the scanner, and the organization is able to notify the pets owner that their pet has been found.
HOW: Free Micro-chipping Clinic is open to the public. No reservations required. First come first serve basis. Space is limited.
