Eating Poo!!............Gross!!!!!!!

Usually I keep the front gates closed but this morning for some reason, hubby went out in the car and I forgot to close the gates. Anyway, after lunch we decided to take the dogs with us on a trip to a supplier and as usual, I was putting all their stuff in the car when I look at Minnie, sitting on the front lawn with a poo in her mouth :yuk::yikes OMG! I yelled "leave it!" which usually works, but not this time! I called for hubby to get me a plastic bag because there was no way that I was putting my hand in her mouth :yuk: Once I had the bag on my hand I was able to pry open her jaws and the poo fell out .........yuck! yuck! yuck! eew!!!

Why oh why would she need to eat another dogs poo????

It's more common than you would think actually! Several of mine do it and my 4 month old pups Morgan and Sassy are total horrors for it! I'm madly dashing around with a scooper before any-one can get to any!!

It's sometimes called "depraved appetite", although given the well balanced diet my lot are on (RC) I'm a bit baffled as to why they do it too

Just be sure to brush her teeth before you let her kiss you again (If ever!! ) ;);)

Here's a link you might find of use about this horrible habit!!

My girls do it all the time :yuk: The most awful part is to get it out of their mouths, OMG! They are not averse to a bit of rabbit, sheep, pigeon, cow or horse poo either, I'm afraid...

 It is pretty gross isn't it, but lots of dogs do it. Some people think it is the dog getting some missing nutrient in their diet, and I know of at least one vet who believes it is not only normal but also beneficial.

Personally, I think it is just one of those things. At one point we had 8 dogs, all receiving the same diet and yet Sam loved nothing better than to chow down on some nice fresh poop.

All of my guys love to graze on bunny & kangaroo poop.

No lip kissing in this household.

none of the girls have done this yet, but before we had the girls, we had 2 cats and Jake our Lab would raid the litter box for cat poo:yuk:if we didnt get their first to empty it!

This wasn't her own or Cara's poo that she ate(partially) some other dog had gotten into the front garden. Would eating another dogs poo cause her any problems??

Yes it can cause problems -- they can ingest worms and other things passed in poop, some of which can make them seriously ill. Best to try and keep them from doing this esp. with strange dog's poop but it IS perfectly normal and lots of dogs do it and outside of being revolting to us, mostly doesn't other them at all. At least if they eat their own or each others' you know their health status! Lily likes to eat Leo's poop but ONLY Leo's poop (she is kind of a specialised fan and her fandom for her beloved Leo clearly knows no limits...). I have to block her from doing this wehn on walks. She also likes eating all sorts of other animal poop, especially cats, while Leo is more selective. Jaspar thankfully isn't interested in poop at all, though as a puppy he loved cat poop when he could get at it.

Caraline you ALWAYS outdo us!! :rotfl:

BTW at Pet Expo they had a wallaby that did parts of the agility course, it was hilarious. His trainer says he can easily jump ONTO the kitchen counters to food surf as well.

Hi Karlin, I have to say that your post has made me crack up with sheer laughter! Your words demonstrate so vividly your clear understanding of dogs and their ways and the ease with which you accept this for what it is...dog stuff!!! Your doggie's are so lucky to have their lives entwined with yours.

OMG thats so gross! None of our Cavs have ever done that but the current one is fond of eating his own sick! Makes it much easier to clean up thoght- eeyuk!

This is how pups are weaned in the wild- the bitch vomits up a meal for them.

Abbey does this. :( Our vet told us it can be an obssessive compulsive issue, and it can also be due to sheer hunger...which we think is what's going on w/ Abbey. She gulps her food, doesn't even chew it. Given she's not breaking it down to get the nutrients from it, she's finding it, she's probably hungry a lot. We're now using a special bowl to slow her down, and it seems to be working...haven't noticed her eating poo lately, either.

My two gulp their food too especially Pippin and Gus used to eat his own poo when he was a puppy but stopped when we changed his food. Any idea where I can get one of those bowls have been looking but can't find one.
