Bailey's no better

Just another little update on Bailey, his cough is absolutely no better at all, we did think it was starting to improve the day after his last vet visit but now it's bordering on getting worse!

We've had him for 6 weeks and for 5 of those he's been on antibiotics to shift this nasty cough, we havn't been taking him out (except to toilet), no baths and he's kept warm with his heat pad and blankets at night.

I'm increasingly getting more concerned as to why it isn't clearing, and preparing myself for the worse. What could it be??

He's back at the vet's tommorow god only knows what's gonna happen next?

I would go see a specialist at the closest vet school. I think you may need help that goes beyond what the vets are capable of offering. I'd look for a respiratory specialist.

I'd try ringing the Royal Veterinary College in London and see if you can get a referral.

Given his likely puppy farm or backyard breeder background, the lack of knowledge about his parents and their state of health or genetic background, and range of illnesses he has had from the start, I think you need to look into possibly more serious problems then a basic cough that can be treated with antibiotics, and definitely move on to a specialist.

Im so sorry Bailey is still not well.
Is it kennel cough he has or something else?
:xfngr:they can find something to make him feel better soon

I don't know exactly know what it is, the vet hasn't said, I just hope it isn't anything too serious. I don't really know what the next step of action will be?

The vet said in an adult they would put the dog to sleep and take swabs from the throat/chest but with him being so young they don't want to do this, she did talk about taking an x-ray if they could hold him still enough!!

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong with him and what the x-ray might show?

Thanks everyone

So sorry he is still ahving problems. That's really tough when we see our "kids" sick and can't do anythinmg about it.

As Karlin said, I would get him to specialists. Vets are just generalists and it appears your vet doesn't know what's wrong either. The Royal Veterinary College in London she mentioned sounds like it's exactly what you need. Around here, we use the University of Minnesota Veterinary College when ouir vet can't figure something out or for emergencies.

I am so sorry you little one is ill...

When Reggie got Kennel cough he was so bad I actually had the vaporizer running with vicks in it ...beside my bed (he slept with me in bed) so he would get the benefit of it....

I know how you are feeling but Reggie did get better ..The also gave him cough syrup.

You and your baby will be in our prayers

I think it can be an allergy!!!! In industrial food are many things who can start an allergy. I would give diet to my dog. cooked chicken, gruel (with water, not with milk), cottage cheese or yogurt with microorganisms.

all these things are good for stomach and gut. cooked chicken and gruel are easy to digest. yogurt with microorganisms are regenerate the flora inside the gut.

You know, what you give your dog! So, you can see this component start an allergy.
At the beginning you feed two components for 7 days, maybe coocked chicken and gruel.
It is tolerate, so you can add an other components, maybe cottage cheese.
It isn't tolerate, so you can see the last components are responsible for the diarrhea.

When my dogs have diarrhea i give them this diet!!! So the stomach can find silence and can regenerate. In the end of diarrhea i switch to the normal food.

Scout starting coughing on the way home when I picked her up from the breeder. She coughed until she sounded like she was choking and then was fine for a while. Of course I took her to the vets, they said kennel cough. Then Breeze started to cough, but it was mild and only lasted a few days.

It took 6-8 weeks to finally get her straight. She was on different kinds of anitbiotics and the vet even did a chest x-ray. I was so frustrated and worried, finally she stopped. I was so relieved. I just felt so bad for her anytime she coughed she was so small. I understand what you are going through, keep going to the vet, and maybe like the advice above even consider a specialist.

Estelle... what kind of tests did Bailey got? It´s far tooooo easy just to give him antibiotics!!!

Please ask your vet for a "complete" blood-check. Bring him some samples of Baileys poop as well - bits and pieces of his poop for several days! Get it testet!!!
And never just rely on your vets diagnosis... when you got it - post it and we´ll have a close look on it!!! They are that bloody fast in poisoning our babies by antibiotics!

Best, Barb

Sorry to hear Bailey is no better. I'd definitely want him to be referred to a specialist. I'm surprised the vet hasn't done a chest xray already. It would be good to see if there are any patches of infection, the size of his heart and whether he has inhaled anything. If he is referred to a specialist I'm sure they'd do this. I hope he improves soon. Let us know how you get on with him.

Some people here may not be familiar with the problems this puppy has had since first collected by Estelle. I would not consider vet care to be adequate at this point and as Bruce says, this dog really needs to see someone with respiratory problems *as a speciality*. I would not wait to see if it goes away. This type of problem can quickly result in a fatal slide in a puppy's health especially with a puppy that has never been in good health to begin with. If this were my puppy I'd be calling the Royal Vet College for a referral today. When a vet cannot produce answers despite repeated attempts to address a problem, it is really time for a specialist if the health of the dog is valued. (y)

Just back from the vet's, I've got to take him in tommorow, he's having an x-ray but if he doesn't stay still enough then they'll put him to sleep and do it and if needs be then also an endiscopy (sp) and a scan to check his heart etc! she did mention about seeing a specialist. Hopefully after tommorow we'll know more and take things from there.

On a good note though his lungs were clearer than last week and he's put more weight on.

If you didn't know about his cough you wouldn't think there was anything wrong with him! He eats really well and he may be small but he certainly makes up for it with his energy and personality he's a real minx!!!

karlin ... i read all the thread from estelle .... so i go familiar with the problem of the puppy!

but, my english ist not good enough to say wat I think completely.

okay, i will try it! please help me, when i make mistake.

okay ...

in the first thread wrote estelle:
bailey has an cough, and he is many pooing. and she wrote that she had switch the food more than once.
this is dangerous for a pup!

in the secound thread she wrote that she switch the food again! she also wrote that the vet doesn't find the reason for de cough. why? what a kind of test had he made??

The vet says the heart are okay. very good! but why he doesn't look for more?

in the third and fourth thread
estelle supposed that bailey had an poultry intolerance .... why? .... only owing the big poop????

I don't think so! I can imagine that bailey perhaps has a corn intolerance! Also i can imagine that bailey's stomach are confused about the many switches with food.
So I think the best way to help the little bailey is a very easy to digest food.

bailey has two problems. the cough and the many poop. with the diet food can estelle resolve one problem. the poop go with the diet in a normal form. so can bailey's immunsystem concentrate on the cough.

the secound reason for the diet food are the many different medicaments. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory's are not good for a (puppy) stomach. they can responsible for many poop too.

the diet is an additional help for the dog, not the only help.

i hope you all unterstand what i mean.
