Breed popularity in UK

It amazes me that staffie registrations remain so high on the list -- they are vastly overbred and are major problems for rescues and pounds to rehome. Almost all staffies get pts for lack of interest in them in Ireland and I know rescues have the same problem in the UK -- most people simply do not want them though I know there are aficionados and I've met some lovely staffs out there. So why are they bred like this? It is like the killing fields for this breed as it is. :(

Simply a chance to get something for nothing. That is certainly the attitude round here, the home of the staffie (Staffordshire).

I saw an ad in the post office for 6 week old ( I complained to the post office staff, who said the ad would not be renewed ) lurchers , which were staffie greyhound crosses. This is not a popular cross, even among lurcher lovers, as the heads don't look right (They tend to have top heavty staffie heads).

I contacted Lisa , who runs Greyhound Gap, about these puppies, as the man had several puppies and was asking about £150 each. She said she would probably end up with these puppies, as the man regularly breeds a litter, then when they don't sell either contacts the dogs home or herself direct. He probably doesn't look after his bitch, so one puppy means £150 in his pocket.

There are some stupid, selfish people in this country too who dont look at the long term :bang:

I agree there are some pretty sick people in this world, seems no matter what country you live in, what a shame.

I'm surprised to see the Border Terrier at #8, they are rare in the US, but all other dogs seem to be in similar positions.

Here is the American Statistics:

American Staffordshire Terrier is #68
Staffordshire Bull Terrier is #85

I spoke to my doggy day care yesterday and they said that have the most wonderful Staffie in foster at the day care and they can't find a home for it. Here is the US they are often pts too, if they end up in rescue.

Wow, I had not idea they were that far down on the list. As much as they are in the news and as many as I see in Baltimore City, you would think they were in the top ten.

-It amazes me, before Megan came home, we used to make a regular trip down to the Dogs Trust in Edinburh looking for a rescue, and it seemed that evey 2nd dog was either a Staffie or a Staffie mix, it's such a shame because, in the right hands with the proper training and socialisation they are wonderful dogs, neighbours of mine when I was a boy had 2, and they were just fantastic animals.
