Lead walking two cavaliers at the same time.

We are hopefully getting a new puppy around July/August time as a companion for Sally. I am just wondering how members with more than one Cavalier walk them on a lead together? Is it difficult to train them to accept this? Which leads are best? I don't want them taking us for a walk!!:dogwlk:

I'm glad you asked this question...I was wondering the same thing too :p Our new 4 month old puppy will soon be joining us for short walks to get used to the leash and I've heard that having two separate leashes is easier to train them than using a coupler becuase it's harder to control them...but I wouldn't know, that's just what I've heard :) I'm sure other people will have better advice based on experience, since lots of people here have multiple cavs!

I have two and I take them for walks on my own.. but they are both trained and they both have strapcollars..

So perhaps it's not bad to take some time and let the puppy get used to the walking on his own, then when he's trained, put them together (I use separate leashes) and they walk nicely next to me..

Qwebble closest and Qwick next to her.. both on my left side..

Good luck and congratz on the puppies ;)

I use a coupler if i'm my on own and find it easier, but will admit that my two are a bit 'pully' :)o we are working on this!!!) if they are on seperate leads thye walk away from each other but on the coupler they cant do that (y)

I have two and I prefer to walk both of them on a separate lead. I have a boy and a girl.. Faith would always smell Kosmo's pee and then get it on her head  I think it's easier to walk on separate leads.. plus when Kosmo poops he literally does sometihng we call the "poopoo dance" where he does about a billion circles before he finally starts going and I don't think Faith would enjoy being pulled along for that ride.. hehe ;)

I just walk with one lead in each hand and then when I have to stop to pick up something I will put both leads in one hand, pick it up, and then continue :flwr:

I did walk Faith separately until she was old enough to go on longer walks though.. I didn't think it was fair to Kosmo and she needed to learn leash manners first... Actually I have one of those outward hound sling n go things and I would bring her with us and put her in that :) I just walked her more and more as time went on and she got old enough until she was finally able to walk our whole 20 minute walk :flwr:

Thanks for the advice. My OH thinks it'll be better to use separate leads so I think we will try this initially. It'll take some time to get used to. I can see some fun and games when we try this!!

Once you have both dogs walking reasonably well on a single leash it is a piece of cake to get them walking together nicely on a double leash.

I use the Sporn Double for my Cavaliers. I love it as it has swivel couplers at all junctions of the lead so it never ever tangles. It is also adjustable so that one dog can have a longer bit of lead than the other. This is especially useful if there is a large discrepancy in the size of the dogs, or if one dog is a puller and the other isn't.

Oh and it is my belief that there are several on this forum who take 3 & 4 dogs walking together.

Caraline said what I was going to say: train them separately, but they will be happy to walk on a coupler, which I think is the easiest way to walk two dogs. I actually use a triple lead for three, and walk Lucy on her own lead (as she is a slower little old lady...). I like those longer couples like the Sporn as short ones keep them all squished together. I don't like chain couplers either.

Thanks for the advice Caroline and Karlin. I'll do as you say and train them separately then try them together. The Sporn coupler looks good and I like the idea that they can be different lengths as the two dogs will be different sizes initially. I agree with you Karlin I don't like chain couplers either.

i think 2 leads in 1 hand is the answer:)
may sound daft but the thought of holding both leads in 1 hand never occured to me at 1st:confused: Chloe went 1 way & heidi the other, then it suddenly clicked that all the people I saw walking nicely with 2 dogs used just 1 hand, I must have looked like a mad woman for our first few walks!!

I know this is SO after the fact and this thread is dead (i'm pretty far behind) but i got so excited when i read this cause Veda does this too! I have never really seen a dog walk and poop six little turds before and I'm so glad my Veda isn't the only one!

Yay for the "poopoo dance!"

haha i found it odd that angel sticks her head under pips bum when pip has a wee wee...glad angels not the only one haha

i use seperate leads for my dogs atm but im gonna get a coupler for my chihuahua and cavalier because i have 3 dogs and one it a welsh cattle dog so although she is fairly small she is very strong and i am only tiny myself LOL but pip has dog aggresion (i think shes protecting me and the pups) but because of this i usually take someone with me even if its my 10year old sister that way if i loose control of pip (touch wood that never happens) i have someone there to look after the pups whilst i go fetch her. shes never hurt another dog but i still worry the way she charges after them lol people say theats the jack russel in her and the chasing is the border collie in her lol
anyways i have gone off topic but yeh im going to TRY the coupler because my girls like to tangle themselves around my legs and i always look like im dancing LOL:jump:

I walk Belle and Alfie together sometimes, in one hand I find it easier, but It depends really on what you think yourself and the way the dogs walk on a lead you know?.

I think mine enjoy walking together anyway....It's always a competition who can be closer to me!!!!

Best of Luck

Evan

I walk my two (formerly 3) on separate leads in one hand so I can "swing" my other hand! (y) I tried a coupler but whatever dog was stuck on the other end of Ollie got very frustrated. We're still working on his leash manners. Once he is completely under control I may give the coupler another try.

Hi
My helper Luke is off with the Scout camp for a week and when he returns the day after hes off for another six days on a Shotokan Karate course at Lancaster Uni so i am left (looking forward to it) to walking Poppy and Daisy and Rosie on my own ,any recommendations i have a lead that has three into one but haven't tried it but is there anything easier apart from total confusion and getting tied up.:

LoL I honestly/ have to admire all of you who can use the sporn/coupler  I think it's a great idea.. but even after almost TWO years now, as soon as that leg goes up, Faith beelines for a "shower" :grnyuk:

I walk with 2 leads in separate hands but my dogs mostly find different things interesting and one generally goes to one side of the sidewalk whereas the other goes to the other ;)

As SOON as we meet another dog though, unless I pull mine in, it's over! They immediately (and sometimes deliberately, I think, lol) get tangled up over and over with whatever dog is there.. so I think two might be the limit

Brian M ~ If they are used to walking with three leads into one, it might be easiest to just stick to plan ;) Let us know how it goes though.. I'm sure you'll work something out.

When my mom's dog Hope (Faith's mom) was up here in the winter, I took them all three on a walk at once . . . with Hope's leash hooked around my jeans loop.. LOL (I couldn't figure it out otherwise )

Good luck! :flwr:

Glad to hear Kosmo isn't the only one with an elaborate poo poo dance, and I don't have the only pair that seem to be a little too interested in pee..!! That's a relief :p

Ha ha Freds the same :rotfl:he's almost developed a new yellow marking for himself on his forehead! I walk them on two seperate leads for better control as judy has to be on outside nearest road because Fred seems to think saying hello to all moving traffic is a good idea! so i keep him on a tighter lead to keep pace with judy  i think she'll always walk like she's on show , whereas he is cetermined to be a plough horse. we love him for it though
