New Puppy

Hi. We just got a 10 week old puppy from a breeder a couple of days ago. The puppy is really cute and is very affectionate. For the most part the puppy is by my wife's or my side so far but every so often we have to put the puppy in a 6 X 6 foot playpen in order to have some space, especially if things with our kids is very hectic. The problem is that the puppy cries and cries when we do this but we feel the puppy has to get used to this from the beginning because it cannot always be around us. In addition, the area is not so small so we would hope he would want to play with his toys. Will the dog eventually get used to this? Otherwise the separation anxiety might make us crazy. I feel like the dog whimpers and cries more than it is happy. I believe this may be because the puppy has only been with us a couple of days and is just getting used to things.

Hi and welcome. :) Putting a puppy into a playpen so you -- and the puppy -- can get some time outs is a good way of managing things. Yes, it is normal for them to cry -- pure instinct for young puppies as they whine so as not be abandoned... but also to get your attention... pretty effective, isn't it? But you want to do just what you are doing -- just ignore the pup when he cries. He will gradually come to learn you do not jump and pay attention every time he cries so it's an unproductive tactic. You also want a dog that learns to feel confident and happy even when left alone. There's info in the Library section on separation anxiety that might help. Also there are many good articles on life with a new puppy here:

I also highly recommend buying one of Dr Ian Dunbar's excellent manuals on puppies as this is very useful to have as a point of reference and for training guidance. Amazon has a range of his books.

Middle of the night

Thanks Karlin for your advice. Another question I have is that the dog is waking up at least twice a night. The first time I take him outside to potty which he usually does quickly and then I put him back in the crate. The problem is that he usually wakes up at least one or two more times whimpering for at least 15 minutes each which I try to ignore but it does break up my sleep at night and i'm tired all day. Does the dog actually have to potty again only an hour later in the middle of the night or is it just trying to get attention and come out of the cage? I'm hoping if I ignore it for enough nights on the second wake up, it will stop crying and I can sleep.

hi and welcome. Im not much of an expert my ruby is not 5 months yet. You will get alot of advise here from more experienced people than me. The only thing i will say to you is that it is hard at the start with the children as well. its hard enough losing your sleep when the children are young besides starting al over with a pup. I never had a crate. I have ruby in the downstairs bathroom with a childs gate at the door, so i cant say about the crate. I did get advise about the crate etc. But ruby is doing great now. I wasnt doing a very good job of training her but now she is great. She will do her business for me before i go to bed and dry all night. Good luck and as i said you will get good advise. It is hard but the puppy will be worth it in a few weeks.

Hi there and icon_welcome

First of all Congratulations on your new baby and welcome to being "owned" by the best breed possible!

OK, think back to when your kids were tiny babies, it took some time for them to sleep through the night didn't it?? Puppies are in many ways very similar nexcept you get to the sleeping through/ toilet trained stage far faster!

You are doing the right thing by taking baby outside the first time he cries, my personal suggestion would be to take him back out when he cries again, but do not talk to him other than to tell him to be busy or what ever your personnal "toilet" command is, he will soon learn that you will let him out to relieve himself but that night time is NOT a time when you want to give him attention, praise etc.
Cavaliers are very much "people" dogs and absolutely hate to think they are in trouble with you, you will find he is quick to learn this, you will have some more sleepless nights yet but the long term benefits far outweigh the short term one's if you see what I mean??

By the Way.. What is your babies name??

NEw Puppy

His name is Toasty. I guess I expected the night wake up with a child but didn't expect it as much with the dog but I guess it is something that I hope will be very temporary. I think another problem is that he is getting extremely tired by 8:30 at night and falling asleep. (His busiest time of day is between 5- 8:30 when everybody is home.) This may be the cause of him waking up too early. I'm having trouble keeping him up any later though. Cathryn, how old is your Cavalier?

Im in the early stages with a pup at 14 weeks,i havent used the crate i have
an area near my back door where the pup can sleep and put paper down
so she can do what she needs to do,Have u got a cuddley teddy to put in
his crate so he can snuggle up to it,i know my pup loves snuggling into
the teddy it gives them comfort, dont forget he had brothers and sisters to keep him warm. Also when my pup is sleepy i put her in her bed and she is not
in the same room as me,maybe on his napping time u should put him in another room away from u both and he will soon get used to being on his
own.Good luck with your new pup he will soon learn i know its hard but it
will get easier.

 Depends on which one you are talking about!! I am a Breeder/Exhibitor and full time lover of this breed, my oldest is 13 and my youngest is 6 Months with all ages in between!!:rolleyes: DO NOT ask how many I have, that is a VERY guarded secret just say I am in the 'teens and leave it at that eh??

I LOVE the name Toasty!! That is really original! Remember you are talking to a somewhat "jaded" breeder here now!

Please believe me when I tell you that it might seem like forever right now, but puppies are very much like babies (except they get past the nappy stage faster ) and you will soon be thinking "What was I worrying about?"

Jayne has given some sage advice re the cuddly toy to snuggle up to, (Now why did I forget that?? DUH!!) the other thing you can try is a nice old T-shirt that is unwashed so smells of you in his bed at night.

Hope this helps??

new puppy

Thank you for the advice. We got the name Toasty after watching a piece of toast and noticing it is white with brown splotches just like the dog we were about to get. My dog does hove a few toys and a towel in his crate but nothing as cuddly as a teddy bear or the like. I was afraid that it would chew it to pieces. I hope it does get easier. I feel bad for the dog though because we have no cavaliers in our neighborhood that I know of and I would love for the dog to hang out with a dog of his breed. He seems to be a little shy around other dogs. It's funny because he is very social to people.

Now that just sounds like a typical Cavalier to me! They really do seem to know when they meet another Cavalier! Does your vet hold puppy socialisation classes? If not then they should know of some-one who does, socialisation is very important at this early stage, expose your puppy to as many varied situations as you possibly can once he is fully vaccinated if at all possible!

Love the story behind the name BTW!! :luv:

Hi and congratulations on your new baby. Toastie is a great name.

I always found an old sock tied at both ends with a crinckly supermarket bag inside was good and a small kong smeared with some puppy food or a small treat inside might keep him occupied. They do like sounds and texture just like babies. A cuddly toy so he can snuggle up with it might help.

He will settle, dont forget he has had 10 weeks with his mother and possibly siblings in the only home he knew. Put youself in his place. Its quite a scary time for a puppy. Give him a week or two and it will seem as if he's been there forever. You both just have to get used to each other. Good Luck and dont forget some :snap: would be great.:)
