Tags: what are they and why use them?

You might have noticed, if you start a thread, that at the bottom of the post you have a space now to put in 'tags'.

Tags are words or short phrases that help to give a category or several categories for a post. For example, when I finish this post, I will put tags for this thread: 'tags and 'tag cloud' -- as this thread is about both those things.

When you add appropriate tags to your post, it adds a new and very accurate dimension to our search facilities. It also helps your post to be categorised on the larger search engines. The more people use tags, the more detailed our tag library will grow, and the more useful the search facility to both board members and non members using search engines.

You can now choose to do a tag search, under the Search link on the orange Navigation bar. You can search by tags that you type into the search box, but also, you get a large box with a 'tag cloud'. The tag cloud lists the most popular tags -- meaning, the terms that are the most popular search subjects. Right now, as we don;t have may tags in there, it is showing all the tags and they are all the same size, As we get more and more tags, the size of the type of the most popular tags will get larger and less frequently searched tags will get smaller. So the tag cloud supplies a really interesting way of viewing what topics board visitors are interested in.

The benefit comes as the library grows and someone might want info on housetraining or Puppias or allergies or breeders. Using the tag search should be especially accurate as these will be threads that the original poster identified as being about the tagged subject.

So if you remember, and if you are posting a thread that might be of interest to others, give it a tag or a few relevant tags (as often the thread will be about a couple of different things).
