Thinning tail - caused by neuter?

I am wondering if anybody has an opinion on this.

Our Sonny has always had a really thick, luxuriant tail. I've been noticing this last month that it look much thinner, like maybe about 1/4 of its volume. He is not scratching, his coat looks healthy & shiny, as does the remaining hair of his tail and the skin of his tail (when I part the hair) loos very healthy. I really don't think he has any skin rash or anything like that, but am wondering if the hormonal shift caused by his neutering may be the cause.

I sure hope it grows in thick again. It was so gorgeous. I mean, up against other Cavaliers perhaps it looks just like an average tail, but it sure isn't his usual lovely tail.

A lot of cavaliers do seem to lose their coat volume once or twice a year as a natural process. I'd think that would be more likely in your weather, too! If anything I'd think a neuter causes coats to become heavier rather than to thin so I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be the issue.

I've never noticed any particular shedding/coat blowing pattern with mine, but I know others definitely do see this, as it comes up on the various boards and lists.

Dylan had a noticeable loss in tail hair when he blew his puppy coat. Though the opposite to you, he lost about 1/4 the volume. He is not neutered and it all grew back.

How old is Sonny? I've noticed in the past several months that Jake's coat has thinned out considerably. Like Sonny, his coat is still shiny, not flaky and no scratching....just a thinner coat.

Tricky has been neutered for 2 months now and his coat is thinning considerably. When I brush him everyday I get two full handfuls of fur enough to make a large softball.

Daisy has a very fine coat compared to many cavaliers. She sheds considerably at certain times. My hubby jokes that you could almost stuff a cushion with what she sheds in a week....
She comes in heat in August and February and she sheds excessively mid way between heats.
I expect Sonny's tail will recover,if it helps take him to a groomer amnd they can wash and dry him and make his tail look fab again.

Thanks guys. I sure hope it grows back. We are just into winter here & I would have thought that this would be the time of year for a thick coat, but maybe not. I so loved his great luxurious tail.
