View Full Version : Crate Training - How long for comfortable little bladders?

So my second baby girl is coming home tomorrow :rah::rah::rah: and I will be sure to post a million and two pictures but first I have a question!

She will be 12 weeks old and I am taking a four day weekend from work to work on a really solid and consistent house training foundation right from the get-go!

My question is, how long can a 12 week old cavalier comfortably hold their bladder? I am going to be coming home on my lunch break for the first few weeks to take her potty but I'm wondering if this is around 4 hours or 5 hours? I want to try to leave her for a while so she gets the idea while I take my older boy out for a long walk or to the park but I want to have a realistic idea of how long would be too long!

Would getting dinner and a movie on a date be a feasible thing to do at this age or not? This will also help me figure out WHEN to take my lunch break when I go back to work :D

We are going to try to go outside and go potty so much that she can't have an accident if she tries  but I would really appreciate a good reference point.

Thanks!

OH! And for taking the time to read and answer, the first of MANY puppy pictures of my new little girl Penelope!

Edit: Wow those pictures were HUGE! Here are some links instead :D

In my opinion at that age, 2 hours would be ok if in a crate. If she's in a crate she shouldn't like to pee in her bed and crates are used to help with learning to hold it. She should be able to hold it all night if she's crated too.

I'm sure someone will be happy to pop in and check on your puppy if you're out all evening.

Those pictures are great, isn't she sweet!

At that age I was taking my pup out at least once every 2-3 hours (more often if not crated) as well as after every nap, meal or drink. He might've been able to hold it longer but I didn't want to take the chance as he hadn't yet learned to ask to go outside. It took another month or two before I could rely on him to ask for it.

At 12 weeks of age, I would think about every 3 hours she would need to go out during the day if crated. I wouldn't give her water in her crate if you want her to go longer. She is a perfect little cutie- beautiful face. Congrats!

I read somewhere that puppies need to go about 6 times a day, and especially right after feeding, drinking, and that they cannot fully control their bladders until about 12 months old.

We got Sally at 12 weeks and were taking her out every 1-2 hours initially. Remember to give lots of praise and a little treat when she toilets where you want her to. Would you not consider walking Penelope with your older dog on the some of the walks so they can play together?
