News: CKCS has cranioplasty surgery for SM/Daily Mail

It took a long time to get a diagnosis; I'd like to know if it was 'Pedigree Dogs Exposed' that helped her get diagnosed with SM.

Good article - hope it helps others!:)

This is so typical of what I hear all the time from people:

We didn't know what it was at first, she's been going to the vets for a couple of years, but it was only about 3 months ago when we discovered it was this.

I'd say the film had something to do with the diagnosis, either the owner recognising the problem or her vet.

The best thing to be done, is to stop breeding from sick dogs. That would definitely help, at least to those not born yet. But, until data about sick dogs are not public and MRI scan not necessary for matting, our dogs will suffer. How many dog owners can afford this operation? How many vets are able to perform such operation? It looks this is a solution just for very few dogs.
This doesn't make me happy at all!:(

IMHO I wouldn't want to have this particular surgery done by a vet -- that's like having your GP perform a brain surgery. Just my opinion on this one.

And yes the ultimate goal must be to stop breeding from dogs that will pass on the severe forms of this condition. (y) With the Canadiangenome research and the EBVs that should be a possibility -- but of course, ALL breeders everywhere will need to follow this and pet owners will need to understand the gravity of breeding a home litter or two and how devastating doing so continues to be for this breed...

I agree on that,GP vets no, but vet neurologist of course. But the result is the same for me.Who is that one that can say:I can do it! It's still remains "experimenting on dogs".... There are very few surgeons around here, able to perform this on dog.
All breeders would do tests(legal ones, puppy mils do what they want everywhere in the world, anyway) if this MRI scans ,UZV ...are necessary to get "breeding license" for every dog(don't know exact term in English). For now, dog must have both testicals, correct teeth, and look like Cavalier
That should not be enough.Kennel clubs must do the first step, and it has to be done in UK because this is the originating country ;) Other countries will follow in time. This might look like a long term project, but it really isn't.What's 5,or even 10 years in history?
If genealogists do succeed ,eventually :xfngr: and find genes responsible for MVD ansd SM, what use, if nobody is obligated to do a test and present it in dogs documents?
Thing is very simple, but there's no will ....
All the breeding stock must be tested and only healthy or less affected dogs are to be used in breeding. All regulated by FCI.
That's what I'm looking forward.(y)

I read about that in my local paper that vet also came highly recommended by a friend of ours whose cavalier has SM . My friends dog has been on tablets for SM for three years now and is doing very well aged six.

We have been told that our Jake might have a brain disorder just starting out on our treatemt to try for the simple things first

I'm sorry Aileen, what are they treating him with?

I will tell you a bit about the things he does he crys when we put a collar on him he also crys if we touch his neck head and ears so we are going by what the vets are saying at this time he does not wear a collar unless we are going out

The article mentioned, "a specialist team of top surgeons were drafted in from Bristol to accompany vet Graham Oliver", maybe the vet might be training to be a specialist top surgeon and he was accompanied.
.

Can you try a harness Aileen? Dylan can't ever wear a collar.
No harness because he has got a wart thing on his back when we first had him I did use a harness but it made it worse

My Local paper did not mention that bit. I think they travelled up for the dog which lived about 10miles from the surgery. Its better that people travel for two hours than put the dog through it plus the surgery.
Its good that they did that and the vet gains more experience to further himself.
