Humping?

Try to forget the concept of 'dominance' (as spread far and wide by TV trainers..).. in the sense that it does apply to dogs, it is badly interpreted and generally misunderstood by such trainers and hence people who own dogs. This can lead to very misguided approaches to dog management and training so it is easier just to not use the term, whch is very loaded in human interpretation and is NOT loaded in dog relevance...

Humping can be sexual, it can be testing or demonstrating a pecking order, it can be a display of anxiety... it can be a lot of things. It isn't uncommon for this to happen between incoming and existing dogs. It is far more common from unneutered males (but also is regularly seen in females! I am sure dogs have as varied a life of sexual possibility as humans so yes, it could be that your female finds other females attractive :) ). As such behaviour is often unwelcome by the recipient, however, perhaps intervene, distract your dog and prevent this from happening (see link below in next post). It can be very uncomfortable and intimidating to the recipient. Or they may not care but you may prefer not to have this happening. There's an information thread in the Library section on humping behaviour too. Also if you use the search function on the site you'll find many threads. (y)
