Rescue won't eat

My 10 yr.old rescue (at Vets) won't eat. Have gotten her to take a small amt since Sunday-eats just enough that you think she's going to start and then nothing. No temp, no signs of pain, no vomiting. Amazing dental for her age-3 small teeth pulled and a good mouthful ,of now, clean teeth left. Vet just took a flat plate xray to see if there are any masses( that will be read in morning). She piddles and has had stools. I've tried all the Vets canned foods, wouldn't take kibble, won't touch Satin Balls, canned salmon or canned chicken. Anyone have some no fail food ideas that are grocery store friendly:xfngr:-snow/sleet tomorrow and won't get to a Petsmart/Petco type store.

Is she getting lots of exercise, i think if they are not getting much exercise, then they need very little to eat, plus not eating means you spend lots of time hand feeding her, which she probably loves, and its just enough to keep her happy. Try giving her small amounts through out the day, not sure if you can take her out if shes at the vets, but a good walk certainly build up the appitite. As i keep being told dogs wont starve themselves. Although i bet like me you worry about nutitional needs being met. di

when we first got Peaches it took us nearly 2 weeks for her to eat properly, i know its hard but decide what you are going to feed her then put some down twice a day then take it up again after a while. its a massive upheaval for them so try not to worry.

I agree with Ciren. No dog is going to starve as long as they are offered food. My Abbey goes sometimes a few days without eating. She keeps praying that she will get some of that stuff that Mom cooks in "that" room--lol. Mine are fed both in the morning and at night and I give them about 10 minutes to eat and if they don't eat then I pick it up.

I wouldn't worry unless the vets are concerned. An anxious dog may go off food for a few meals to several days (this happens all the time with foster dogs). For an adult dog this isn't really an issue -- just choose a food and give it each day. If she still isn't eating after many days -- eg nothing whatsoever -- then have a talk with your vet on next steps. There could be a medical problem for not eating -- if it goes on and on, I'd be talking to a gastro specialist eventually. Hopefully she will just start to eat.

Well, little Penny is eating with gusto. Talked with Vet last night and we decided not to separate the sisters for feeding (Cass will gobble all). Being able to see each other eat quit being meaningful to Penny-she needed to be next to Cass. This morning Dr. fed them and simple held Cass away from Penny's food and Penny ate everything and tonight I fed them with that same process and same result. I'm so delighted-Penny came very thin and not much reserve. Dr. was concerned and now we're smiling. :rah:
