Puppy heart murmur

My B/T female was diagnosed at 11 wks w/ Gr 1 L heart murmur. Prayed and prayed it would go away as some heart murmurs do. Just came from the vet, now at 14 weeks she has Gr 1 R murmur and GR 2 L murmur.

Please, Cavalier people, give me some advice. Is this nothing to worry about? Or have I come across future heartbreak? (literally and figuratively)

I am in love with this little puppy and want to do the right thing for her.

I know how you feel. My Ebony had a puppy murmur. I was so heart broken only because my old vet didn’t explain it properly. My Breeder then emailed a few cardiologists for advice and they advised that I should have it checked again at a certain age and that most puppies grow out of it. When I had Ebony checked by a cardiologist at about six month it was gone. Correct me if I am wrong a puppy at that age can’t have MVD it is a puppy murmur. Also the cardiologist said that not all vets can hear a puppy murmur. I would get a second opinion.

If this is coming from a regular vet, I'd get an immediate appointment with a cardiologist (specialist) for a start. Vets are so-so at accurately diagnosing murmurs. If this is a serious murmur, you need to see a specialist right away.

Your vet should have taken the time to explain the significance of this murmur and what happens next. Puppy murmurs are not the same as MVD. I'd first ring your vet and ask for a clear explanation of what is going on, and then ask for a referral to a cardiologist to find out exactly what is going on, what if anything you need to do, if this is a likely flow murmur (probably nothing to worry about) or a more serious murmur that needs care right away.

You should never be left feeling that you don;t understand what is going on by a vet. You need to return and get an explanation that helps you better understand the situation and what to do next and what the diagnosis means.

We aren't vets, so can't give you the detail you definitely need right now for what could be a serious health condition or may simply be something to keep an eye on. You need your vet to explain what type of murmur s/he thinks this is and if it is potentially serious, to give you a referral to a specialist.. :flwr:

PS Flow murmurs don;t tend to go away til 6 months. It wouldn't be at all unusual for her still to have a flow murmur just three weeks after it was first heard, in such a young puppy. But again -- your vet should be explaining this.

I second the opinion that you should get her to a cardiologist. My tri-color Oz was diagnosed with a Grade 1 murmur at just 4 months of age. It was first heard by his regular vet and then confirmed by a cardiologist through ultrasound, echo and 24 hour Holter monitoring. His cardiologist explained it as leakage across the mitral valve. He will be two on July 1 and his murmur is still Grade 1 and unchanged from more than a year ago. He is active and show no signs of any distress. His cardiologist said no treatment is necessary now - although he should be seen once a year.
