which one should i buy? the top seller on amazon is the Conair..

Don't know that brands matter at all especially just to trim one dog. The only real difference is whether to get the guillotine type or the snipper type. I just have inexpensive pairs (one of each type) and have had them for years and years.

The groomer does my guys' nails ... they both have black nails and I'm too wimpy to attempt them ... :o

I use a guillotine clippers, find them better able to deal with particularly tough nails. As Karlin said, the cheap ones are just as good as fancy branded ones.
