Vet requiring info re:- SM

Phoebe

I was chatting to my vet some months ago about Cav health issues in general and SM in particular (not in relation to my dog) She was genuinely interested in becoming better informed, which I thought was brilliant. I emailed her a couple of links from this site to get her started.
She has since moved away to another surgery, but has emailed me today to say that she thinks she has just come across her first case of SM in a Cavalier and obviously wants to do her very best for the dog and most importantly, thoroughly understand exactly what she is dealing with.
She lost the links that I gave her when she moved surgeries and I'm not sure that the info that I gave her was comprehensive enough anyway, as I'm only just learning about SM, and I'm certainly not a vet!
Can anyone who really knows their stuff about SM, provide me with the info that she requires please?
I think it's fantastic that she is prepared to become better informed about the condition and that she is receptive to the idea that there is always more to learn in order to do the very best for your patients. She is hoping
to move back to our area in the future to practice and I sincerely hope that she does. Sadly, none of us ever know if our dog may be the next SM victim and I would very much like to be registered with a vet that knows and understands this condition.
I would really appreciate any help, as I would like to forward any info to her as soon as possible.
Thanks in advance :)

If you go to the library section you will find lots of SM info - also check out http://sm.cavaliertalk.com. I's great that she wants to be proactive and learn more. Unfortunately, she'll probably come across more cavaliers with SM in her practice than just this first one.

Info ref SM ?

Somewhat puzzled that a qualified VET does not know where to go within her profession to find out about SM ?

However she should be directed to the CKCS Club website, or of course Drs SKERITT and or RUSHBRIDGE.

Skeritt is at the Chestergates Referrel Hosp and Rushbridge, Stone Lion.

A google search will reveal all.

Regards Mark.

Vet Requiring Info Re : -SM

Phoebe,

Dr Clare Rusbridge has just put on the Internet her Web Site about SM ,and other Neurological Problems

She is the Neurologist who mentioned about SM in Cavaliers in 1997, and the Cavalier Breed has so much to thank her for in her Research into this Disease.

Thanks folks for the info :)

Mark, I hear what you are saying, but what matters is that she is willing to become better informed, what matters is that she is open to discussion with pet owners about what really concerns them. If she was not prepared to do this, how many more Cavaliers may be misdiagnosed with allergies for a couple of years whilst their condition progresses and they are in pain, because from what I've read on this site alone, that does seem to happen.
I never imagined that I may know more about a particular illness than my vet, but then I never imagined that my heart would skip a beat every time my girl rubs her face on the sofa.
Whatever helps the Cavalier breed eh...(y)

Unfortunatly it is true that many vets working in Small practices dont know about the SM. Ive been relatively lucky in that Rubys vet Steph has owned Cavaliers and had heard of the disease but even so she very much listens to what I think and our discussions with Dr Rusbridge to make desisions about Rubys future.
She takes everything I say and acts on it if I feel it is nesersary. I think where SM has been pushed in to the closet for so long it isnt as known as other problems ie MVD.
Even so I think any vet that is making the effort to learn should be praised as at the end of the day it is quite a specialist subject which is very much left to the Neurologists to take care of.
In the same way a doctor of Cardiolodgy wouldnt be able to operate on a Brain Tumor a general Vet doesnt know everything about a Neurolodgical Disorder!
