"THE PARLIAMENTARY enquiry into breeding and showing has concluded that purebred dogs are suffering from ‘a serious welfare problem’.
Although the six-month ‘investigation’ by the Associate Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare (APGAW) has concluded the contents of the report are not due to be revealed until October."

A PROVISIONAL decision has been made by OFCOM, the independent TV regulator, regarding the complaint lodged by the Kennel Club against the programme Pedigree Dogs Exposed.
The KC claimed that the programme was unfair and had failed to ‘fairly and properly’ reflect the KC’s ‘deep commitment to the health and welfare of dogs and responsible dog ownership’.
It is also believed that at least one Cavalier owner who appeared on the programme made a separate complaint and that this been decided upon provisionally too.
OFCOM said this week that the decision was being considered by solicitors for both parties and that certain procedures must now be gone through before the findings are made public.

Interesting article Bet,
It will be interesting to wait and see what the complete report contains, until you read it all and understand the context in which it was written it's hard to make head or tail of it really.

This is good news for dogs and will hopefully highlight a way forward for the misfortunate animals who fall through cracks in animal welfare legislation.These are far more numerous than the show stock.

If I could add a further comment to this Thread.
What caught my eye and should be of interest to Cavalier Pet Owners,is that the ENQUIRY is concerned that currently the PUBLIC has very little Information as to to how to ensure they Obtain a Healthy ,Well Bred Puppy.
That there is no doubt that Public Education will need to play a significant role in the Future and will be a STRONG FORCE to IMPROVING BREEDING PRACTICE.

Sins, absolutely agree; purebred dogs are purebred dogs and any welfare programme must be standard to purebred dogs, not club-registered dogs.
I want to make Susie, the rescue tri, the poster girl for a campaign for health -- she was owned by an Irish Kennel Club registered breeder and he bred the maximum litters he could have registered then ws rehoming her, to be used for more litters if the new owners had wanted (thankfully she came to rescue). She has a severe grade 5 murmur at only 5-6 -- so those are the genes in all those puppies and I am sure a good few will be bred by people who want to make some money back off their dog or just think it would be fun to have puppies.
There simply has to be mandatory testing tied to breeding as this dog's murmur would have shown up ages ago, almost certainly, and she would have been spared the strain of bearing puppies with such a bad heart and her genes would not have circulated onwards.
But a leading role must be taken by the national kennel clubs, as they are the ones who register the dogs -- the breed clubs are only a small portion of all the dogs that get registered, and then on top are all the dogs that aren't registered.
If ALL registries had to comply with a testing regime too that would eliminate all the trash registries pretty quickly as they'd actually acquire some meaningful oversight role.

Is it possible that the full APGAW Report when it is published ,will have recommenrations for Puppy Farmed Dogs as well.
I know having read what has been reported in Dog World, it seems so far so good.
But....... back to our Cavalier Breed, will the APGAW Committee been influenced by what the UK CKCS CLUB have been doing for the Health Problems in the Cavalier Breed,but as we are well aware that there is still a Hard Core of Cavalier Breeders, who say that they can't be doing any more ,their excuse is for not SM MRI Scanning, is that the Goal Posts are constantly being shifted, that the Specialists are still arguing about the Basics of the SM Disease in Cavaliers.
That the Researchers have been trying to find an answer to Heart Disease and SM in Humans for Decades ,but surely if those Hard Core of Cavalier Breeders would only follow the UK CKCS CLUB'S Breeding Guidelines ,then some Cavaliers might stand the chance of Healthier, Longer Lives.
What really is a despicable remark, is that some of us who are trying to get all Cavalier Breeders to Health Test their Breeding Stock ,are accused of wanting the Lime-light ,and this is our true reason for our Interference in wanting all Cavalier Breeders to Health Test their Breeding Stock.
