There is new Information on the UK CKCS CLUB Web Site

www.thecavalierclub.co.uk

The Heading is

YOUR CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL

The Annoucement mentions ,that while all Breeds of Dogs have a Risk of Genetically Inherited Disease,it is important that Every Cavalier Owner is aware of these Health Conditions and the Health Screening Available.

That while Health Screening won't Guarantee that your Cavalier is Free From a Hereditary Condition ,at least by knowing that a Cavalier has been Health Screened for ,and mention is made of the 3 Main Health Issues in Cavaliers

MVD
SM
Eye Conditions.

That Responsible Cavalier Breeders are reducing the risk of passing on Pre-Existing Conditions.

This Health Screening will likely have been carried out by Cavalier Breed Club Members or an Accredited Breeder.

The Announcement also mentions how important it is for Cavalier Breeders to follow the CKCS CLUB's Breeding Guidelines.

This is a good step forward Bet, it still doesnt make anyone screen their breeding dogs, and anyone buying a cav in this day and age would be mad not to insist on a certificate showing a clear result.

There's also advance information about a Health Day to be held at the Royal Veterinary College next November, jointly with the Cavalier Club - looks great, with all the top people talking about the MVD research, EBV, SM, the foetal research, and someone from the RVC talking about neurological treatment - which I hope will include news of the RVC's trials of a new pain control for SM. The Cavalier Club may not move as fast as we would like, but given the difficulties they have had in the past year, they really are now beginning to move in the right direction - due not least to the leadership of Lesley Jupp. She retires next April, and it's going to be sooo important to vote the right person in to succeed her as Chairman. The converted members have got to make it fashionable to scan - then hopefully the laggards won't want to miss the bandwaggon!!

This is certainly wonderful news. I am delighted.
For those that want to read the leaflet

http://www.thecavalierclub.co.uk/health/KC_LEAFLET.pdf (http://www.thecavalierclub.co.uk/health/KC_LEAFLET.pdf)

I have only skimmed, must read it thoroughly, and first impression is it may confuse some pet owners as it does not spell out that the low cost MRIs are not for diagnostic purposes, but for checking on breeding cavaliers, but otherwise it is wonderful to see this long promised health information published at long last.

Hopefully the KC will immediately start sending this leaflet with all new registration papers and transfers of ownership.
