Dooley & SM

Hi :)

Dooley has recently been diagnosed with SM (beginning of Aug) and has been put on 300mg of Gabapentin (split into 100mg doses 3x a day) and it seems like the meds are finally kicking in!

The neuro specialist said that he wanted Dooley back to 95% of what he was like before he started showing symptoms and after being on the gabapentin for just over 2 weeks, I would say that Dooley is pretty much back like his old self :jump:

What I was wondering was, is this good spell likely to continue? Or should I expect Dooley still to have bad days on the meds? I hate seeing him when the SM takes over & when he is in pain, it's so heartbreaking :( I guess I'm just hoping that people with experience can give me some advice (y) I know that having to live with SM is a long journey... for Dooley as well as me!!

Thank you :lotsaluv:

I wanted to say Hi and welcome! I am sorry to hear that Dooley has SM but it is wonderful that he is reacting well to medication! Some dogs do well on medication and it seems like gabapentin might be the trick for Dooley. Please keep us posted.

Thank you! It does seem like now that the meds are working, he is much like his old self! :D Fingers crossed that he stays this well for a long time to come :)

Hello to you both,

Its always tragic when we have another Cavvie anounced on this forum but you most certainly are not alone.
This disease will be a rollercoaster for you and Dooley. It is for all of us and if you have found a med that is working this quickly then you are very lucky! Some are still battling to allieviate some pain months on from a diagnosis.
If the Gabapentin has made a big difference then it will probably continue to help him for a while.
But as with any long term medication it will cease to be so effective at some point. At which stage you can talk to you vet about increasing the dose.
You may find he is sleepier and dosier after he has his meds- this is normal and he needs to be able to dose at these times!
Make the most of his good days but be prepared for the bad.
Sometimes my Ruby doesnt want to get up and do anything- in which case I leave her with her pillow and cool pack to rest.
You will find that Dooley will tell you when he needs a bit extra. Ruby certainly does!

I hope you will find all the support you need on this site- it truely has been such a life line for me and so many others.
I understand completely how you feel and like I said- you arent alone.

Good luck to you and gentle hugs for Dooley!

Thank you so much

The meds so far have made a huge difference. When he was first on them, he was definitely tired and just wanted to sleep, but the last few days he has been as right as rain - even getting up to his normal naughty antics & being really playful! It's been lovely to see him back to his old self :) Hoepfully it will continue but I will be prepared for the bad days when they come.

Hi and welcome to you and Dooley. Glad his meds are starting to work. Lots of hugs to you both.
