Sunshine breeder decided to retire and rehome Sunshine's sire, I jumped at the chance to have him so now he is here with me. He will be eight this summer. I took him to the vet this morning and she thought his heart murmer is 3-4 grade. He is overweight and has a few bad teeth that will need to be pulled. (I honestly don't know why his teeth were let to go this bad).
He will need to be put under for the tooth cleaning but I also would like to neuter him at the same time. My question is, will he be okay with the anesthesia with his heart murmer. Vet doesn't want to put him on heart medication until he starts to cough or he becomes exhausted all the time. Also is there anything else I should know with his heart murmer? Vet reminded me cavaliers are lucky to live past ten....it makes me sad that I might not have him as long as I enjoyed Sunshine. He is just a great dog.

There usually is no MVD-related problem to anesthesia procedures for cavaliers with murmurs in the grade III to IV area. I would prefer to have him examined by a cardiologist first. I don't like to leave MVD medication decisions to general practice vets. But if you leave in an area where specialists are few and far between, then you have to rely on the generalists. Hopefully your vet is well-experienced with MVD. His advice about holding off on medication is pretty good, but an ultrasound by a cardiologist and an x-ray to check on enlargement would be helpful in deciding about the timing of starting medicines.
