WOW!!!! :jmp::jmp::jmp:

What a fantastic commitment from the UK griffon breeders to the genome research!

This is the exact same research project that Rupert's Fund supports for cavaliers! :D Maybe this will inspire the international CKCS breed clubs to make the same commitment and support the genome work in a similar way either through Rupert's Fund or independently. It's truly great that the griffon breeders want to support the work before their breed becomes as affected as cavaliers, and are acting early to fund research work internationally. They are fortunate in that many of their breed scanned so far are clear for both CM and SM, giving them many more options if they tackle this horrific problem now, whereas it is almost impossible to find cavaliers clear for CM.

That is awesome! Yes, they have been very proactive and very important addition to research!

What a pro-active group and what an amazing amount of money from such a small club.
( 201 Griffons registered in 2010 as against 8154 cavaliers )

:eek: Wow, that sure puts things in perspective.

To look at it another way -- this is as if each breeder gave £44.75 per griffon puppy registered this year: surely worth it to try and find the understanding of this condition and the genetic test that might be all that can save an entire breed from slow collapse into unacceptably high incidence of an extremely painful and costly disease. (y)

To reach the same figure, cavalier breeders would only need to give £1.10 per puppy.

I have great admiration for Rachael Harvey and the breed club.

Thinking of the Griffon breeding programme going on in Australia (or is it NZ?) which has shown very hopeful results in breeding away from SM simply by following the researchers' recommended breeding protocols, the supporters of this breed should be a shining example to Cavalier breeders. Well done!
