View Full Version : HOMED: Short-term foster for 18-month-old Cavalier, Dublin area
29th March 2011, 12:56 PM
There is an 18-month-old unwanted cavalier heading to the pound today–I think there is a support net in place for this dog, and I am working with the pound on this, but the pounds are absolutely full and it would help if this dog could go to foster by the end of today or tomorrow and thus not have to endure being in the pound.
As I am not doing formal rescue, this is not a dog that I will be re-homing, and if plan a falls through, this may be a dog that the ad hoc new rescue group might want to try as a first rescue case. :) This would be an easy dog to home, given its age. I will of course give support on the re-homing process if the new group wants to take this dog on.
I am not sure if this is a male or female, but basically the owners got a puppy, left it out in the back garden all the time, and they now have a bored, untrained young dog that no longer interests them. I am not sure exactly when the dog is heading to the pound either, but I believe it will be at some time today. The pound is aware of the situation and hopefully we can all work together to help this dog move on to a fresh start.
My main goal is to keep the dog out of the pound, which is not a great place for a cavalier. The dog will be going to Ashton pound; I can potentially help transport towards the end of the day or tomorrow if needed. As soon as I know better what is going on I will let people know. I am about 75% sure this dog has a safe and excellent rescue place to go to, so in the first instance I am just seeing if somebody could keep this dog from having to spend waiting time in the pound before it can move on to rescue. If that rescue space falls through, Plan B means I will go nag the new rescue group members…:)
A couple of board members are already aware of the situation with this dog so if you read this–yes, this is the dog under discussion, and yes, Ashton will help.

If you need me just holler. Anything I can do to help [whether through the new group or on my own] please let me know. How is the new group going? I see Dundalk Dogs have a stray male just arrived too.

Thanks so much, but this guy needs to be close to Dublin for now as I hope will be going to rescue in the area very quickly.
I am not doing rescue work and cannot do it at this time so if s/he does not get the possible rescue slot I am not sure what will happen. I am only trying to help give this dog some options after he came to my attention via board members.
This cavalier is now in the pound as s/he arrived this afternoon. This is a 5-day kill pound but the pound will try to get this dog into rescue somewhere.

Hoped for rescue space not possible so he is looking for somewhere to go.
The pound will try to get him into another rescue or does the fledgling group that met wish to try their hand at their first cavalier? Male, 14 months old, really lovely according to the pound. Decision needed fast as this is a 5 day kill pound and surrendered dogs can be PTS at any time as they don;t necessarily even get 5 days. Pound is trying to help but if they are inundated with dogs this guy will be in trouble.
If the group wants to help with this guy, somebody text me and I will tell you how to go about getting him out. Otherwise I will tell the pound in the morning to try other rescues to see if they can find a space for this young cavalier.

Here he is! He is chipped but needs to be neutered.
His head looks giant from that weird angle! But he is only a young fellow and barely older than a puppy.

Oh he looks gorgeous. Do hope someone will be able to help him very soon. http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv97/Cavviewagtails/Animations/Fingerscrossedpoog-1.gif
What we really need is an "Iro-Tunnel" under the Irish Sea, then we could all come and bring back these lovely dogs to the UK when they are in dire and urgent need of rescue places and foster homes icon_nwunsure

Hi Karlin - I can foster him until a rescue space or home is found for him? Not sure how the process works with Ashton in terms of foster, but I can collect him tomorrow afternoon and hang on to him for a while... Please give me a call in the morning if I can help. I hate to think of the little guy in the pound... :(

Thanks so much and this guy should now be over with Elaine, with the new rescue group taking on their first cavalier. :w*w:
Will be working together on this one so that everyone has a chance to find out how the process works. :) it is a lot less scary than it might seem at first! I am so proud that people have stepped forward to give this guy a second chance–he has really been through the mill and is so deserving of a new home.
Sorry that I was not in touch until late morning on this guy. I had an appointment that lasted most of the morning and wasn't able to check in on the board.

That's great news. Do we have any more details on him- is he neutered for instance?
Well done everybody. If I can do anything- home checks or transport give me a yell. Not really free to do anything until Friday.

Delighted to hear that you are underway with your first rescue - and what a truly deserving case. Does he have a name yet?
If not, how about a donation for the privilege of naming him? I'd like to suggest "Primo".
Do let us know how we can make donations to help you in general, won't you?

Here are a few pics of the handsome "TBD" (currently Scooby!) after his dinner and bath. He's a gorgeous little man, energetic and very affectionate. He has already made himself at home on the sofa and fallen in love with 15 month old resident Misti. 8 year old Calvin thinks he's ok too!

Was there an accidental ' at the start or end of the email address perhaps? That address should work as I get emails and send them to that mail address. :)
