recommended chew toys?

GraciesMom

Well-known member
Gracie is so hard on any chew toy bones.... she can make serious damage in no time. I have to throw them away in a day or so because she can get little bits of them off too fast. She loves to have something that she can get to the back of her teeth. The dental chew things that are edible create digestive issues so not willing to go there.

Any recommendations that are truly safe, small enough and can hold up to serious chewing???

P.S. She does not seem to like the rubber material toys at ALL. Does not play with them or chew on them.

Sophie is an aggressive chewer. I recently ordered some of the extra-thick rawhide chews from Dr.s Foster & Smith web site. I got the natural (non-flavored) type. They have been fine and her tummy & intestines seem happy.

A friend gave Bentley a hard, bone-shaped chew toy the day I brought him home. He likes sitting on my lap and chewing on that bone. It wasn't in a package so I don't know what it is. I bought him a Kong because I had read such good review of them. He loved it for 5 minutes, circling & growling, but now only goes to it if nothing else is available.

Cow hooves. A bully stick lasts about 3 days in my house, the hooves are showing a tiny amount of wear after 2 months.

I know these are not toys! But my two love raw beef soup bones and they can have one for a good hour and half before the finish cleaning the meat off it. I always keep an eye on them while they have it. Works wonders on their teeth too. I put Holly on a foam mat while she eats her's that way I can easily clean it afterwards. Jasper takes his out on the grass to eat. They have never been given the chance to bury it as I always take it away as soon as they finish cleaning it! Sorry I can't recommend any toys as my two love soft ones.

If you can find one of these, this toy lasted through a boxer with no damage at all, and Rose loves it too : http://www.vitacost.com/Hartz-Chew-n-Clean-Dog-Teething-Ring

I also have her one of these: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3540881&lmdn=Dog+Toys (hard plastic, not rubber)

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3521485&lmdn=Dog+Toys (she actually likes the plastic ring on it the best :p)

And we had one of these for our boxer too (different brand, but this toy survived even being lost outside for weeks at a time, lol): http://www.petco.com/product/102441/Kyjen-Hardcore-Firehouse-Dog-Toy-With-Squeaker.aspx

Assorted Nylabones (both flexible and hard plastic),

Those seem to have been the favorite non (completely) rubber toys for the dogs that we've had. Oh, and plastic wiffle balls :) .

Oh, how I wish that were the case in our house. Sophie demolishes one in an hour.

After I stopped letting Sophie chew the Nylabones, she stopped having terrible bouts of diarrhea. I think the little bits of nylon she chewed off and ingested irritated her G.I. tract. I figured it out after one too many bouts of cleaning up the carpet, floor, crate, etc. After I tossed them, we haven't had the problem with diarrhea, no more meds, etc. .

Another favorite chew toy of Sophie's is the antler - elk, I have been told - she loves them and they last forever. I haven't found them in the big box chain pet stores, but the local independent ones carry them.

Nylabones are not working for us...

I love many of these ideas!!! YAY! I do have a caution about Nylabones for all. The flexible Nylabone will last a few days only for us but use them for short periods. BUT....the Tuffies Nylabones have created major problems for two dogs that I know very well. Both are small dogs like Gracie. They both had to have tiny Nylabones pieces removed from either their tummy or bowels thru surgery. The little hard pieces that came off the Tuffie Nylabones were apparently spikey after chewing/twisting them off. The spikes got embedded in their digestive systems. Gracie can get those little bumps on the Tuffies off within a day or two.... so that are in the trash now. Seriously! So I have thrown them all out after what happened to the other dogs. Maybe your dogs do not chew yours so aggressively but Gracie does. That's why I was searching for other options.

Gah. We only use the smooth, round ended nylabones, but that's good to look out for, thanks. We had this one: http://www.nylabone.com/product-finder/by-product-type/dura-chew-bone-original.htm and our boxer didn't get pieces off of it, but the squirrels did it in when she left it outside, haha. That was the end of that one :p . We also get (I forgot about this one, though it may be too rich for her tummy) Moozles. I can't leave Rose with one for more than 30 minutes, but some times, it's 30 minutes well worth it. Since they're all the same price, I root through and find the biggest 2 or 3 when I go to Pet Supplies Plus : http://www.merrickpetcare.com/store/treats_detail.php?c=17&s=33024

My Claire is a super chewer. I had to throw out all her stuffed toys because she thought she could 'eat' them.

I have a couple puppy kongs that I always have frozen in the freezer with peanut butter in them. But, even though they are small, she is very small (a little over 10 lbs) and can get her tiny tongue way down in and clean them out in about 10-15 minutes. But, I still like them.

My friend got her hooked on rawhide, so I searched high and low for US made Rawhide. Finally found a site that I really like. I buy her their retriever rolls. The 5" ones, and she gets about one a week or so. They are very tough. I like that theirs contain no chemicals, and that this site uses the last US rawhide manufacturer. Bad part is you have to order in bulk, so I had to order something like 8 lbs worth, which equated to something like 52 rolls (when I got them I was so surprised it ended up being this many). But, it's okay, I just keep them in a tin. Heres the site and they also have deer antlers like someone else mentioned.

Their rawhide is highly digestible, and we've not had any issues as they are hard enough she can only chew and get very little off at a time. I never let her have anything without someone being with her, and when she gets the rawhide down to the last bit, I throw it out.

They might be willing to send you 'one' sample antler or rawhide to try before you order, it'd be worth asking. I had already tried the rawhide for Claire from a local pet store, but they stopped carrying the USA ones, hence my internet search.

HTH.

Really?? What size do you buy? I get the 18 inch ones, and I can't imagine one those disappearing in a hour.

The 6 - 9 inch ones are gone in an hour, well maybe two hours. The 18 inch ones would probably last a half day. She really is a serious chewer.

I've never used the flexible ones we use the hard bone shaped ones for strong chewers: http://www.petsathome.com/shop/bacon-bone-dog-toy-by-nylabone-32966. The flexible ones always worried me to be honest, and we only bought one of them when he was a puppy.

Do bullysticks not end up very soft when chewed? We used to feed pigs ears and rawhide chews, but stopped after Murphy kept trying to swallow the soft chewed piece that he was left with.

several folks asked me...

I had mentioned some Nylabones that had caused major digestive issues for some friends' dogs that required surgical removal. These are the ones that caused some problems: http://www.amazon.com/T-F-H-Nylabone-Super-Tuff-Little-Bacon/dp/B001EUI25A

Gracie can get the bumpy end in a mess in just a couple of hours. She is a TOUGHER chewer than Nylabones had in mind! Anyway, just know that some pieces chewed off get really spikey and they can then cause internal issues.

Got several items that you all recommended as a test

Debra, did you decide what you're going to try?

Here are a few that I got today as a test. So far her favorite is this one but will have to watch how fast she chews up the keys:

http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2750568

The small version of this Petstages bone... also will have to see what happens to this pretty closely: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3207107

The extra small version of this Kong toy... she can chew on rope and bone. This is good for playing tug and also chewing.
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3206987

This rubber chicken .... not so much for long-term chewing but short periods
http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3201196

Also got this for short-term chewing on the tentacles.... is a stuffed animal that she also seems to like alot for playing tug.

well... the keychain teething ring is going to have to go...

In less than 10 minutes, she had about half chewed off a large chunk on the end of one of the keys.... something tells me that Gracie is a VERY unusual hard chewer. If there is something significant about this, I hope someone tells me. But the key teething ring is just too dangerous for her for even a short period. soooooo.... this one is out.

Wow.... she is probably too mature for the puppy chewing toys, or her teeth are too large. (I forget Gracie's age). You might want to check with local independent pet supply shops and try the elk antler. I know Gracie has been ill with her colitis, but does she get a lot of exercise, like walking 20 - 30 minutes per walk, twice a day? She might be chewing out of boredom, but I am no expert.
