All right all you techie wizards out there - how many of you have upgraded from the I-Pad to the I-Pad 2? and was it worth it? Thinking of doing it for my husband for his birthday, but not sure it's worth all the fuss. Ideas?

I don't get the fuss about it , to me a laptop would be better, but people go crazy over the ipad which is just a bigger iphone without the phone abilities.

I and my partner adore our iPads and my partner in particular uses his constantly, including doing presentations from it (And I actually have two–one that I bought, and a loaner from Apple, so I can have one upstairs, one downstairs). :D But neither of us has felt it is worth upgrading yet. That has generally been the message from most of my fellow tech journalists too. On the other hand, I would be more than delighted if someone gave me the new version! It is thinner, lighter, has a camera... You might also be operating from the ulterior motive school of thinking–which means, if you get your partner the new iPad, then you might inherit the existing iPad and have pretty much the same amount of fun. to me, that sounds like a reasonable level of motivation for getting a new one…

If you are looking for an alternative tech oriented gift that most people really love, especially if they are frequent fliers or public transport commuters, or if they like listening to music while they're working on the computer, I'd highly recommend the Bose noise canceling headphones.

Oh No!! I've just bought my other half a set of Phillips noise cancelling head phones. I think they should be ok though.

Re i-pad 2, I don't have an i-pad 1, but I have an iphone and have decided that it's not worth the expense to upgrade to iphone4 for now anyway, but if you would have use for an i-pad, go for it!

Graham has an I Pad 2, he loves it. I wouldn't bother with one, I think it is great if you are travelling etc. I have a laptop, so I can't see the point.

Oh I am sure the Phillips ones will be great, too! And probably not as expensive as the Bose, either. Good noise cancelling headphones are really great for flights or for even wearing while listening to nothing -- if you are working and just want to block outside noise.

I know so many people who said they didn't see the point of an iPad until they tried using one for a few days... It is quite a different experience. I love it for games -- which I never ever play on the computer! Also for the various apps. Also very handy for travel as I can do my writing and file stories without having to lug a much heavier laptop. Lovely for viewing pictures too. And the battery life is incredible.

I love my IPad 1. I won't be upgrading to a 2 not yet anyway! It would be nice to have the camera though. I take it down the coast when we go away and it is fantastic to be able to have Internet while down there. The only thing I don't like is no flash player on it. But other thatn that it's awesome.

So it is good for writing also? Is there a special app that you need to get for that? I do a ton of writing and if I do get him the I-Pad 2 and I take over his old one I would love not to travel with a heavy laptop.

By thy way, he already has the noise cancelling headphones. Great idea though.

I love my iPad 1. I won't be upgrading, but my boss has an iPad 2, and it is very nice.

I have several apps for typing: pages, evernote, RTFsomething...mostly I just use pages though.

We use iPad and thought of upgrading to iPad 2. After testing and doing bit of research we concluded that you only need to upgrade if: 1. You need to use the camera if you Skype on iPad, 2. You spend lots of time reading large PDF files, 3. Your current iPad is only 16 GB and you need more space to store books, songs, video etc, 4. Your ipad is more than 2.5 yrs old. Otherwise, upgrade to iPad 2 is really a lifestyle choice and if you have the extra dough to spend.

I bought an iPad2 when I was over in vegas and love it. But having used an iPad I don't think if you own the original then the price for a new one is probably not justified.

It got even better yesterday when the jailbreak was released cl*p

Graham has an I Pad 2. He can print from this which I believe you can't on the I Pad 1.

I have just been into PC World and looked at the Blackberry Playbook. It is very similar except is supports
Flash and Microsoft. Pls it fits in my handbag. Just got to decide whether I really need it.

16GB can be sufficient depending on what it is going to be used for. If you want to store loads of videos on it you will be pushing it, however you can save those videos on a PC and stream from there.

you can print from an iPad 1 as long as it has been updated to the latest version of iOS through iTunes.

Don't get a playbook they have been getting slated in reviews, the Samsung galaxy tab is far superior, it also supports flash if that is really important to you, but it also means you have access to the android app store which has loads on there now. Blackberry's appstore is terrible.

I only just saw this thread.

A friend gave me an iPad and I LOVE IT! I thought, whats the big deal, I mean, iPad vs laptop. But I can tell you now that I have one I am HOOKED. I wish it had 3G capability, but beggars can't br choosers. I love that I can take it anywhere because it barely weighs anything! I put mine in my purse most of the time (okay, I'm a fashionable girl, I carry a pretty decent size purse). I have a lovely cover for it (think ireader style cover) and I'm ready to go anywhere.

Just now have to figure out how to tether it to my cell phone so I can have 3G in areas where there is no wifi.

If you had told me 6 months ago I'd feel this way, I'd have thought you were crazy. I LOVE IT!

I managed to allow myself be persuaded that the 'family' would benefit from having an iPad, so we bought one last month. As the person that resisted it the most, guess who uses it the most now!
At the moment I only use it for checking in here (naturally!), my emails,Facebook, twitter and a local news site. I know there must be lots of other worthy things I could be doing- can anyone recommend sone decent apps? I have a Sony e-reader so don't need to download books (something else I resisted but love), I also have scrabble and solitaire. My poor little iPhone is feeling very dejected now :(
