Jaspers Spinal Decompression Surgery

Jasperxxgabby

Well-known member
Jasper developed sudden paralysis in his hind legs and last Tuesday - 21st June, his vet referred him to a center in Birmingham where a consultant was waiting for him, he had an emergency MRI scan and Spinal Decompression Surgery. What had happened to Jasper was a disc which had gradual degeneration, ruptured, resulting in the disc material herniating upwards into the spinal canal and putting pressure on the spinal cord. The MRI showed a a wide area of cord compression on the right running from the 1st to 3rd lumber vertebrae. Jaspers spinal cord has been decompressed by a "hemilaminectomy" where a window of bone was removed from over his spinal cord allowing the disk material to be removed. The MRI showed he as degeneration in other disks.

Its been a horrible time to put it mildly, on the Tuesday morning when I took him to my vets I thought that was it for Jasper, after phone conversations between the vet and the consultant Jasper was given a 60-70% chance, when we got to Birmingham and the consultant examined Jasper he said that Jasper did have sensation in in hind legs, he then gave Jasper 90% chance of success. Since we have got Jasper home its been up and down, he as progressed to the point where he can actually stand and support his weight for a short time then he sits down, we have made a 4ft by 4ft kennel for him and he will actually walk in it(wobbly for a short time) and he shuffles himself in his bed to get himself comfortable, It was brilliant and a relief when he done his first poo, 6 days after his operation, he as a sling called a quick life and he is allowed outside four times a day up to four minutes a time, the sling supports his back end and he move really quickly and he loves it, it was funny in a sad way when he first attempted to cock his leg to wee. Then the realisation of the situation hits me and its like a smack in the face the state my beautiful little boy is in. I know his recovery will take weeks or months. Jasper is due to see the consultant again in two weeks time up in Birmingham or sooner if needs be, he is in the care of his usual vet and he had his stitches out today, yesterday evening Jasper developed diarrhea so he having treatment for that and they have changed his painkillers, poor thing is unwell today as if he's not got enough to deal with.

So there you are, I'm on a bit of a downer about it all at the moment, the guilt in me is just winning the optimistic side of me for the time being, I hope that Jasper will recover and that he will be out walking and enjoying himself, he as always been an outdoor dog, he would walk all day if he was could, and its just so sad I could scream about it all. Its like a part of him as gone its hard to explain and i am rambling now sorry if I seem doom and gloom its just, I dont know.

Hugs to you. Just keep the end goal in mind when you see him in such distress right now. In a few months he will be running around in the garden like he should!

Wow what a terrible series of events. The vet though has given very good odds for him but these recoveries can be long -- and it sounds to me like he is doing really well! Keep the faith and see how he does. :flwr: And keep in mind that there are wonderful little carts made for dogs that support their hind legs and even dogs with no walking ability left can fly around, on grass, the beach, snow... I know of someone with a collie who is like a new dog after an accident, with one of these carts. So either way I think he has a positive future. :) I have a friend in a similar situation to yours and the orthopedist said to let the dog go at his own pace but keep him motivated to do things on his own -- only by using those legs will he restore ability to them -- he was confident that a cart was not the right option yet as the dog would likely slowly regenerate walking ability (he is one of the best orthos in Ireland). Also have other friends who had a similar surgery on their lab X and though he did have some weakness he still gets around OK after many years.

Recovery from major surgery like that is going to take a lot of time, and even when the back is healed, the unused muscles will take time to get going again. But the specialist has given him very good odds, so you and Jasper are going to be learning new lessons in patience together! And hopefully there will be enough tiny signs of progress from day to day to keep you going...

What a lot to deal with...

Sending you prayers That Jasper will recover effectively, even if a bit slowly. It does hurt to see them limited in their abilities bur sounds like there is hope.

OH goodness what an awful thing to happen :( So very sorry.

It's so good that Jasper has come through the surgery and is doing well - that is very encouraging. You might find that some toys that you can play with Jasper such as the Nina Ottosson toys will help keep him stimulated during recovery, without putting any strain on his back - also have a look at the Brain Games book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brain-Games...2774/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309540171&sr=8-1

I don't know if hydrotherapy has been suggested to you - this may help him recover his mobility and muscle tone - obviously you would need to check with his consultant. There are some centres in Wales - not sure if any of them are near you.

Thinking of you and wishing Jasper a good recovery.

You and Jasper are in my thoughts.
And there I was feeling sorry for myself about my Ebony’s back problems, but reading your story I am concerned that this will happen to her one day.
I hope and pray for a full recovery for Jasper. Sending lots of

By any chance did you go to The Willows in Solihull for the operation?

You must have been so scared!!! I'm so glad that the paralysis was not permanent and that Jasper seems to be recovering slowly but pretty well. Good for you for getting him the surgery so fast before the damage set in and the odds were really against him. Sorry you're having to deal with bowel issues too. Is he at least able to tell you that he has to go so that you can help him outside? Hoping that will stop soon and that his recovery continues, even if it's in slow bits and pieces. You can always scream your head off when you write to us. We don't mind and we truly understand your frustration and your love for Jasper and what you sense he has lost. Hopefully it's not forever. Hugs to you.

Poor Jasper, sorry you both have had to go through this. He made it out of surgery, so I would say the worst part is over! From here it will only get better. Hang in there.

Andrea,I saw this on Facebook. So sorry about what happened to Jasper what an awful thing to deal with. Hope he has a speedy recovery. I'm sure he will with all the love and care he'll get from you.

Hello Andrea

So sorry for you two ,you must feel devastated but with you there he will get the best treatment I am sure .

Best and Kindest Wishes To You Both

Hi Andrea,
What a dreadful experience for you.Initially I didn't realise just how serious this was and that he's been through such a major surgery.
Sounds like you were very lucky to have such a skilled and knowledgable surgeon and in time,Jasper will make a permanent recovery.
I know the wonderful care and attention he has at home will give him every advantage.
Thinking of you both.

Andrea,
How scary for you. Im send best wishes your way for a speedy recovery for Jasper.:flwr:

I'm so sorry this happened, but to give you a little encouragement, a friend of mine had to have this emergency surgery for her dachsund several months ago. They stuck with the program diligently (she has FB pics of him and his walking sling, he's a cute little guy), and he was recently released for normal activities, though there are somethings that will always be restricted (like jumping off the bed). I hope Jasper has a recovery that goes equally as smoothly! :)

Poor you and Jasper - what a shock. Keep up the good work - I'm sure with your care and devotion Jasper will make a good recovery.

Poor Jasper & poor you.

I think anyone would be on a downer after what you have been through, especially as you have to face the sight of your active little dog being so limited in what he can do.

Then the problem with the diarrhea, needing to change the drugs and the effects on him.

It must feel never ending.

He is a lucky dog to have such a caring owner, so grit your teeth and just get through this bad patch. Hopefully you will soon see him enjoying his walks again.

Gentle hugs to you and Jasper, I hope his recovery continues. We are thinking of you.
