View Full Version : Roller coaster day for Bonnie
27th August 2011, 04:02 AM
What a day yesterday was 12 hours at vets and a roller coaster of emotions. Bonnie was showing signs of struggling to breath, thinking she was suffering paralysis as a result of her SM we rushed her down to our local vet in the morning, where they found a swelling in her throat...we thought that was good news maybe easy solution remove foreign object. She was placed on O2 while the vets tried unsuccessfully to insert breathing tube. x-ray showed swelling in her throat and fluid on her chest and abdomen...first thought possible heart failure...what more could go wrong for this little dog? Emotions thinking today might be the day to let her go at a young age of 3. Well more did go wrong..when they moved her to do another x-ray she went into cardiac arrest. Our wonderful local vets brought her back, but we now had to try and move her to a specialist vet 1hr away and she was unable to go without O2, trying to get portable o2 was becoming a problem...to the rescue came the local fire brigade who loaned their oxy viva.
We just made the journey to the vets with our local vet in the back seat with her (the O2 cylinder ran out about 1min away), rushed her in where she was again stabilised after going blue a few times, huge swelling completely blocking her airways, vets thinking tumor. Again thinking we were going to lose her today a CT scan was done, so we could make the right decision. Low and behold fluid was found and gunky pus was syringed out. She had a massive abscess, her only chance was surgery though risky. Vet cleaned out the abcess and said it was one of the most putrid smells. Surgery a success so far. Now just waiting for swelling in her throat to go down and hoping none of the pus is in her lungs. She has a tracheotomy tube and is on O2 still and massive antibiotics.
I'm glad it wasn't her SM, heart failure or a tumor, because I think I would have been making a hard decision. It was something unrelated and probably caused by a grass seed. But aren't our Cavs stoic creatures they just keep fighting. She is not out of the woods yet but things are looking up. I think the only reason we work is to look after our dear pets.

Bonnie has got through yesterday's surgery quite well, she looks brighter than she has in a little while, so makes me wonder if this was brewing and because of all her other problems it was missed. Anyway she is still on O2, currently in one of those incubators they place premi babies in, with a great view of all activities going on at the vets. She is welcoming all hugs from her carers, I think they said she wants hugs as much as needing her O2. Her lungs had a bit of a hiding yesterday so need time to recover. Still keeping fingers crossed but definately looking up from yesterday, with her tail wagging when we visited.

Wow, Kudos to your vet for going beyond the normal caring scenario and actually riding with you to the emergency center! What an emotional day for you! I'm glad she seems to be on the mend. Amazing that a little grass seed could cause that much trouble. The sonderful thing is that Bonnie won't remember that she almost died. She'll just remember the caring and the loving treatment that she received. I hope you can bring her home soon. Molly must be just moping around.

So glad Bonnie is doing better, and hope she recovers completely. Just for once, not a specifically Cavalier thing - something that can happen to any dog. Oliver is at the vet's at the moment having a grass seed removed from his ear - we do need to be extra vigilant at this time of year, when it's so easy to get a grass seed into the skin or in the ear if they snuffle around in long grass. Oliver got his just sniffing along at the edge of the pavement!

Poor Baby and Poor Momma. What a terrible experience this must have been!!!!!! It does seem that all the right people were in the right place to be able to help out. What an amazing job they did too. And how brave are you. Hang in there. Now that the problem was found and she has received very good care she should be feeling better--as you say she is wagging her tail. Good sign.
Hope she is healing well and is able to go home with you real soon. And please keep us updated.

Bonnie was given her wings yesterday, she had deteriorated yesterday to the point where she was struggling to breathe on O2 yesterday and our choices had run out, we don't know why the deterioration but possibly pneumonia, but she was on the strongest antiobiotics and still deteriorated.
The sadness and the pain of loosing your friend and shadow at such a young age is unbelievable, everytime I think of her I am in tears she was such a little fighter and you always wonder if there was something else you could've done.
RIP my little girl may your wings sail you across the rainbow.
Paula and Molly.

Oh my goodness, I am soo stunned. I don't even know what to say.......she was so young, and you did everything in your power to help her, please don't question that.
I am just so sorry you have had to make that hard decision. Know that we are thinking about you and saying a prayer.
Let us know how Molly is too. Hugs to you both.
