Another week, and another Brooklyn ailment!

So last night I was doing my nightly groom/tick check and I notice on her digital pad of her back left paw, she had almost like a black-ish scab that was quite large. Well, later in the evening that scab looking thing came off (either from her licking it or naturally) and right now she has this quite large sore on the pad of her paw (pic below). I have no idea why or how it happened, but not really sure what to do about it. Any one else seen something like this or have and good tips to keep her from licking it or to keep it clean?
I spoke with the vet this morning (I swear, I could buy her a summer house by now with the amount of times I go in there) and she said to watch it today and maybe bring her in. I think I will do that later, but would love to be able to clean it on my own etc. I guess I am just more confused on what it is or where it came from. Poor thing, always something with this one! The pas is a bit swollen, but not much, it is just like this damp sore vs. a cut or anything.

Anyway, thoughts while I wait for the vet would be lovely!

Oh my goodness. Poor Brooky :( That looks like it hurts. I have no idea what that could be, but it almost looks like a burn. Could she have burned it on something??? I really don't know though. :-?

Can't say I know what it is, but it looks sore and like it might sting. I would just wash it with a soft cloth and mild soap. If your're worried about her licking it, when Sydney had a problem, I bought white cotton baby/infant socks and slipped that over his paw and secured with first aid tape. It wasn't too bulky for him to walk and didn't seem to bother him that it was on. You may also want to add a dab of antibiotic cream to the sore to help take the sting out.

Great idea on the baby sock, that will help the antiseptic stay on too. I would only put it on while I am around her, as she is a sock lover and I would worry she would try to eat it :-P but I will be around for most of today and tomorrow...so this will work great. The vet suggested flushing it out with Epsom salt water. My husband and I have no recollection of her burning herself of even stepping on something funny. Humm.

Poor thing, it does look sore doesn't it?! She isn't limping, but I know it must bother her because of her content licking.

Thanks again!!!

Poor Brooklyn! Well, as usual, a Cavalier not showing pain. But licking can sometimes indicate that. I wonder if she had something caught on it and licked it raw. I'd watch it, and if it doesn't start healing I'd certainly take her in.

Either way, a hug to you both from us!

Bathing in Epsom Salts (or even ordinary table salt and water) is good for hardening pads. Oliver got a sore paw last summer from getting a knot of hard mud right up between his pads, or Brooklyn could have trodden on a cigarette butt that was still burning. With sores like this, keeping it clean and letting air get to it is as good as anything - so a sock will help with both. But if it isn't drying up in a day or two, add another window to your vet's summer house!

How is Brooklyn's paw? Did you figure out what it was? Hope it's better and not painful for her. Hugs...

Thanks so much for checking in Joyce :)

Funny that you just posted, because we just got back from the vet. We tried to avoid the vet (with her guidance of how to try to calm it down an treat at home), but by today, it is still swollen and yuck. So we went in...the vet did a swab of the wound and it was full of bacteria and her lymph node on her leg is huge (she shoed me where it was so I could feel it). So she definitely has an infection we need to treat, so we are doing that for 7 days. But on Tuesday we go back to get it checked again because she wants to see it without the infection because she is actually worried something might be stuck inside, in which they would have to do an investigation into it. Though, we cannot see a wound/entry point. Her pad is quite swollen and really bulbous on the end, and she is really just sleeping all the time...probably from the infection.

So, hopefully the antibiotics help!

Ouch, that looks and sounds sore, I hope the antibiotics have worked, how is Brooklyn? Hope she is up and around and back to normal and that she doesn't need any further investigation.
