Knee came out of socket

Hi All

Last Sunday I took Rosie & Ebony to a new Hydro Pool that had opened up in our area it was like a fun day out and the dogs had a swim in the new pool. It was all properly supervised. When the dogs tried to get out of the pool I noticed that the ramp was slippery and they struggled a bit to get out. When I got home they all had a rest and when one of my cavaliers got up I noticed that she was slightly limping on her back leg. I took her to the vet and he said that her knee had popped out, and he popped it in again. She wasn’t in any pain and was happy for him to do it. He gave me some tablets and said not to let her run around and jump up on things, that most of the time with rest it will correct itself and only in some cases it needs an operation. Has anybody had any experience with this and can tell me what the outcome was?
Thanks

I had a similar experience with my old mix breed a few months back. She was limping and didn't want to get out of bed. She was 14 YO so for a few days I thought it was old lady pains, but took her to the vet and her knee had also popped out (this was after a big play session that it happened).

She was fine after that. Hope yours heals soon!

Hi

Thanks for your input. As yours is an older dog it must be easier to keep her calm. Mine is only 18 month old and forever wants to play with our other Cavalier. I feel awful when I have to tell her of. She looks at me as to say, what have I done wrong? The vet made it very clear for her to only have controlled exercise.
It doesn’t seem to be a common thing in Cavaliers as nobody else has posted anything. I just wanted to know if the vet was telling me the worse case scenario when he was talking about an operation. Just before this happened I signed Ebony up for Obedience Classes that start in September. Hopefully she is ok by then.

Thanks

Sorry to hear your cav is having a problem, my Gabby is having pain in her hind leg also, thinking of you and I hope that your little one as no further problems:)

This is a luxatting patella and is very common in cavaliers -- if you use the search function you'll get lots of info on this topic, and there's also a post in the Library section. Several of our board members have had dogs have the surgery for this. As your cavalier is 18 months, I'd probably go get a second opinion -- if the knee is popping out at that age it really is unlikely to improve as your dog's joint growth is done. I'd at least want a grade on the luxation by someone who knows how to do this. You need to go get a vet who can test the joint and give a grade on the luxation and determine if surgery is needed -- or I'd go back and ask your vet for a grade on the luxation and ask if you need to see an orthopedic specialist. Otherwise what happens is the problem generally steadily worsens and causes a lot of arthritic pain -- and earlier onset of arthritis -- for affected dogs.

You will need to really mind her from jumping on and off furniture, going up stairs, etc. If it is a low grade then you are probably able to avoid surgery but this will be a lifetime issue to manage.
