Dylan is off to the RVC tomorrow. Eye ulcers and ingrown eyelashes.

My poor darling Dylan is off to the Royal Veterinary College (Hertfordshire) tomorrow.

Dylan had conjunctivitis which lead to an eye ulcer. The ulcer healed but the conjunctivitis didn't clear up so I took him back to the vet. She found an ulcer in each eye and ingrown eyelashes.

We have been referred to the RVC to see a specialist because the vet thinks he needs his lashes removed.

I'm terrified! I was only told today that our appointment is tomorrow. It's a wonderful place but this is where Dylan had his MRI which diagnosed his SM. When we went last time, I didn't know they were keeping Dylan overnight, it was quite a shock. Margaret Carter will remember me crying my eyes out. So, at least I know that might happen, I'm prepared. I was told not to give him breakfast so it's possible it all happens tomorrow. But I don't really know much about the process.

Whatever the vets decide to do for Dylan, or how and when they do it, it will be the best thing for Dylan. When our dogs are referred to these centres of excellence we have to place our dogs in their very capable hands, stay strong and leave it all to them. Dylan will be absolutely fine, so stop worrying. Whatever is done, it will be sooner rather than later.

Hi Pauline,
Sorry Dylan's not well....he'll be fine, and he's in good hands..... take care of yourself....

Hugs to you Dylan Poppy and Kiplin

So sorry he's not feeling well. He will be in good hands at the RVC -- let us know how it goes and what you learn. :flwr:

Dylan didn't have the operation. She said he also has dry eye and if we can manage that problem he might tolerate the eyelashes. He was given a tiny tube of gel that cost £60. There's less than a teaspoon in there!! He'll be on that for life. It's an autoimmune suppressant so I have to wear gloves. If this doesn't work he will have electrolysis on the hairs, no cutting, just needles. Dylan was SO good today. He had tear strips, drops to dilate his pupils and dye put in his eyes plus this probe that taps the eye to measure pressure. We saw some lovely dogs today including an Irish wolf hound. It was massive!! I was so excited, I've always loved them. He also has something I forget the name of where the blood vessels in the eye were thinner than they should be. Tired but relieved for now.

Hi Pauline,
So relieved for you Dylan....Ive just dropped Leo off at the vets for a heart scan....he's developed heart failure :(
We'll know more later.....Im so worried for him.

Hugs to Dylan

Just waiting for them to call me. I'll post the results of his scan on CT when I get back. It came on very quickly......poor little chap.:(

If the tube of gel that Dylan was given for his dry eye was Optimmune, it is very much cheaper to get online - if your vet won't charge a fortune for giving you a prescription for it. My Oliver has dry eye and gets through about 2 tubes a month, but my vet only charges between £3.90 and £6 for a prescription for 2 tubes (cost varies according to how many prescriptions I get at a time) and I get the Optimmune from Hyperdrug, a very reputable online pharmacy, for around £28 a tube; if you search online you may find it even cheaper. Dylan will be on it for the rest of his life, so it's worth getting it as cheaply as possible! Optimmune works a treat, so I hope it will solve the eyelash problem as well.

PS Assuming Dylan is insured, my insurer (AXA) is pretty good about paying out for the claim for Optimmune that I put in every 3 months or so (it's a fiddle all round to claim every month), and only charges the excess once a year, when Oliver's insurance is renewed.
