I posted a while back about Rex having conjunctivitus that was hard to cure. It went on for almost two months so our vet sent us to see a eye specialist in Dublin.
He said Rex has two problems - the first is he has eyelashes growing into his eyes so they are constantly rubbing the eye. Second prob is his eyes are protruding too much from his head - as a result when he blinks he isnt lubricating all of the eye - only 70% of it so he's suffering from dry eye which was aggrivated by the stress of being in kennels. He recommended surgery to make his eye smaller by stitching the corners of his eyes. If it means he is no longer in pain I'm all for the surgery but I am wondering if anyone else has ever had a similar problem. I hate to think that our doggie is in pain every day. We have gel to put in his eye when we go out now and for when he goes to sleep (he sleeps with his eyes partially open which isnt good for him). I just want him to be happy and painfree :(
 
Dylan's eyes are often open slightly when he's sleeping too and he has conjunctivitis now. I have never heard of stitching the eye before.
 
oh, poor boy. I did hear of that surgery one. I was watching a show on animal planet, animal cops or something like that and a dog they rescued had to have that done. I seem to remember that dog having a good result. The alternative for the dog on the show was to have his eyes become ulcerated and eventually lose his sight, so it wasn't much to think about in his case. I seem to remember the dog in the show being a cocker.
At least you have things you can do to give him relief while you decide. What did the vet say as a remedy to the eyelashes growing into the eye?

My Toby, who is now 11, has suffered from dry eye since he was about 3. Originally the vet was talking about sewing the corner of one of his eyes, but in the end he didn't have it done.

Instead, he was put on Optimmune eye drops: these aren't an artificial lubricant, they actually counter the dry eye problem. I think it depends how bad the dry eye is as to whether it will work, but if it does, it just means continuing on the drops once or twice a day. I now do Toby's eye's each morning and that is it - no other lubricant drops needed.

My vet said if this hadn't worked he would have sewn up the eye slightly and we would have had to used lubricating drops as well - what you are doing at the moment. Might be worth asking the vet about Optimmune though.
 
Thanks for your replies and apologies for the delay.

Jan I asked about the drops but the vet reckons the surgery is the best option for him. At the moment we have a gel we have to apply when he's going asleep or outside, and if its windy he recommended to keep walks short and sweet.

I spoke with our regular vet last night and he went through the report from the optomoligist (sp?) and agreed because of the size of the opening causing the dry eye its the best option. He also assured me he is one of the best eye surgeons around and Rex would get the best care out there, and recovery would be quick. I have to ring next week to arrange a date for the surgery.

He also said (in the nicest possible way) I'd prob be more traumatised/upset than Rex worrying about it - he knows me too well :rolleyes:
 
My friend's 5 yr old blenheim was in a fight with a larger dog and had his eye pulled out of its socket. He lost the eye and the veterinary opthalmologist recommended the same surgery that was suggested for Rex since his remaining eye protudes a lot. The opthalmologist said she had done a number of them on cavaliers. My friend declined since he has had no other problems with his eyes and she doubted he would be in another fight. The fight occurred when he was at a home daycare and the owner took 2 dogs out for a walk and left the other 6 dogs uncrated and unattended. He felt terrible and he and the attacking dog's owner paid for the eye surgery, but my friend's dog still only has one eye. We joked that he should wear an eye patch while his fur was growing back in. Just wanted to let you know that I have heard about the surgery. Good luck,

Primrose oil (as a supplement) is supposed to help humans with very dry eyes. Perhaps it would be worth trying in the meantime?

He has all my sympathy. I have very dry eyes myself and when they are bad it's horrible. Your eyes feel like someone has rubbed them with sandpaper and they're on fire. Rex may also appreciate a cloth soaked in cold water over his eyes from time to time - it helps with the burning sensation.

Thanks Lisa, the specialist said its like having Sand in your eyes. I'll try the evening primrose oil, I really appreciate all the help here.
