Default Seminar: managing dogs in a kennel environment

Tara and Lisa of Dog Training Ireland are running this two-day seminar in Dublin next weekend, 25th-26th March. This might interest someone in Ireland or in the UK (Ryanair to Dublin is cheap!) or someone you know who manages lots of dogs -- vets, breeders, rescues, kennel owners.

The woman doing the course is an expert in this area and is coming over from the US.

    The seminar covers:

    • The Kennel/Rescue Environment - Making it a Bark Free Zone
De-stressing: Identifying and removing stress within kennels
Evaluations (Behaviour and assessing the dogs needs) - What people working with dogs should know

    About Dee Ganley

Author of 'Changing People Changing Dogs', Dee has been working with dogs and horses for the past 35+ years and is the sole proprietor of Dee Ganley Grooming and Training Service based in New Hampshire USA.

Dee has competed in the sports of Schutzhund, AKC OB and is now doing some herding, agility and freestyle with her current four-footed friends. Dee also does the evals for the Paws to Read program (modelled after R.E.A.D) which was developed in her area so dogs and their handlers go into the schools / library's and children read to the dogs. It's a huge success for all involved.

Dee has an extensive background in teaching personal protection and working with many Police and Service Dog handlers. Dee works with and coaches Search and Rescue and Police dog handlers for competition events. "The last team I worked with won the 2003 Obedience, Scent and Obstacle course events and was number 1 all around in Canada."

As Training Director for the Upper Valley Humane Society in New Hampshire, USA for over 5 years, Dee built a comprehensive system of management and interaction that measurably reduced stress and improved the quality of life for dogs in the kennels. Karen Pryor was a regular visitor working with Dee to explore the detailed use of clickers leading to a range of environmental strategies and handling techniques to improve the life quality of kennel dogs.

Dee specialises in "difficult dogs" and has been very successful as both the behaviour consultant for one of the top 5 shelters in the USA, and as a private consultant/trainer for unruly and aggressive dogs.

"When I started back in 1999 with UVHS our Euthanasia rate was around 43%. By implementing our self-control through positive reinforcement and management, by 2001 we dropped it to about 23%"

Is it ok to cross post this to the TRPD PetCraftProject board, as maybe the rescues might be interested?

Please do Nicki! The price is amazingly low and I know they would love to have as many as possible there. You'll know from their posts that Lisa and Tara have a great dog ethos themselves -- are totally positive-training focused and very committed to rescue and they would I am sure be very happy to advise on lodging etc.

Anyone interested can email them thru the Dog Training website for more details.
