Small Dog Run - Yay or Nay?

What is the general opinion of taking your cav to a small dog run (an enclosed area where many small dogs run free and play) ??

Is this viewed as a wonderful thing for your pup - to play and interact and socialize with other small dogs?

Or is it not so great b/c of the risk of rough-housing, as some of the other small dogs, while still "small" can be significantly larger than a puppy cav ... and also, so many dogs, risk of your dog getting sick, dirty, smelly, etc.

I was there and a woman picked up my puppy and said his heart was beating fast and he might be scared. My puppy is very eager w playing w other dogs, not a feaful personality. But I started to wonder, is the small dog run just too much stimulation for the puppy? Dont want him to get over excited ... or is that being overprotective. Help!

How old is your puppy ?????????????
As long as he has had all his shots I would not think it as a problem.
I think they should be socialized young, I took Dudley to Obdience School when he was a puppy after he had all his shots.
I think you are just being nervous he is probably just excited to play with
some other dogs.
As long as the bigger dogs are not hurting him in any way.

I think it's a great idea. Socialization is very, very important. We used to go to a dog park for only small dogs, but now a dog park opened only 5 blocks from our house and we go to that one instead. It's a mix of small and large dogs, and I think it's better exposure as it's good for her to be comfortable around small and large dogs. It's also big enough for us to walk her way from things if it gets to be too much.

Typically with organized dog parks you need a permit/tag which means you have to show proof of at least a rabies shot in order to get the permit.

dog run

bailey is 5 months ... he has had all the shots.

thanks for your opinion! My boyfriend says I'm being overprotective. He loves the small dog run and thinks bailey loves it too. I just wanted to feel out the group on this site as all seem very knowledgeable here.

Be happy that he loves the small dog run and let him have fun.
You are being overprotective, better to have a well socialized puppy than
a timid shy puppy.
Only my opinion.

Wish we had those here, that is why I am getting another one.
So my boy will have somebody to play with. We'll plus I really want another one.

This is true, speaking from someone who has a shy dog due to not being socialized properly as a pup...all before we got her, and making up for that is very difficult and time consuming. Another reason we are getting a second dog as well, it should really help her.

Socialization is really important. Along with the dog run, you might want to look into some obedience classes. Your pup is at the age where it will learn really fast PLUS in a few months it will be at the age when you will WANT it to know some commands! I also personally find obedience classes great learning experiences for me; I learn more each time I enroll. It will help build a great bond between you and the dog, too, moreso than you even experience now, if you can believe it!

It's easy to be worried about your dog. Knowing you have some control over the dog, and knowing more about dogs and dog behavior will help you know what is a real concern and what concerns are more worry than anything else. Puppy/Obedience classes will help you with these things.

BTW, with a five month old puppy, we will be demanding pictures. ;)

Our vets does a puppy party to socialise new puppies, I was really scared the first time with Busta if anything came near him I would go to pick him up, unfortunately they had also invited great big labs and a bull mastif that would have flatterned me - for Woody and then Ozzy they did a small puppy party one week and a big puppy party the other week, both enjoyed it soooo much. I think it is a great idea if they haven't got another dog at home.
