Charlie's got spots :(

...After all, he didn't exactly have the best start in life - we're his 4th home and he was only 2 in March..

wow. poor charlie--that would be hard for any dog, but for a cavalier to have to keep moving and to lose those he's bonded with, that is so heart breaking to think about--and even worse to think he didn't even have someone to really bond with. poor little guy, thank goodness now he has his real home. I hope he and you don't have to deal with SM now, when he's just trying to take happiness for granted, as he so well deserves. I'm glad he has such a good mom who will make sure he will get what he needs, and if it's medication for SM, then he'll get it. i hope somehow it will not be SM.

Thanks Judy :) Yes, he's very settled here and knows for certain that he has his 'forever home' - he has got us all 'under his paw' LOL

We are hoping it's not SM too - I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy - let alone a Cavalier :(

I think I get more upset about it when Maxx has an attack than some people would as I myself have nerve damage in my spine so I can relate to the feelings of pain, tingling & frustration that they must get. I can use my TEN's machine though and short of shaving all their fur off to stick the pads to their skin, it would be nigh on impossible to use it on the dogs!

How is Zack today?

Hi Judy,

He's actually doing really well, thanks :flwr: He's still on his anti-histamines but he's more 'normal' now (if that's possible for Charlie  ). I am going to the Vet's today and will see what the bloodwork shows up - if it's back

Well, miracles  The blood work is actually back - only after James had to make THREE calls to the lab :(

It would appear that my darling boy has multiple allergies

He is ... wait for it... allergic to inside...outside and grass    - ever heard the like?

James has now asked for a complete breakdown of the screening so that we can get to the bottom of it. We have wooden floors, leather suite and cotton curtains & I am forever cleaning and vacuuming so we are quite stumped!

Anyway, he has to have another course of steroids & as the Pred didn't do an awful lot for him when he had them a few weeks ago he now has to have these other ones at a cost of £5 per tablet :yikes

All I can say is NEVER have a Cavalier without adequate insurance

James was so relieved when I said not to worry as both my dogs have a £5000 limit a year. He siad that he knew I was the sort of person who would starve to buy the dogs their medicines icon_whistling

Nifa had an allergy to grass too

Hi Just to tell you Nifa my blenheim had an allergy to grass last year . Her bib , 4 paws and some of her tummy came out in scabs. Our vet gave her a course of antihistamines and I had to wash her daily in a wash like hibi scrub to prevent further infection in the scabs , It cleared up within a couple of weeks and has not recurred this year thank god .I felt so sorry for her it can be no fun being itchy like that. Hope your Charlie is feeling better give him a cuddle from Nifa and tell him he'll feel better soon .
Mimi

Thanks Heidi,

This isn't just grass though, he's allergic to indoors and outdoors as well

Only I could have a dog that was allergic to everything  icon_whistling

Weird thing is, last year, my neighbour's GSD had a similar thing where he was allergic to almost everything so I'm going to go and have a chat to them tonight. Harvey had immunotherapy and I think he's fine now. They had to take him to see a skin specialist somewhere first before it was all diagnosed. At least Charlie has had his tests done at the Vets surgery. :D

Only just caught up on this thread.

Poor Charlie, it must be awful to be so ichy in this weather. Esp if he has allergies, you'll have to get him a spacesuit to go out in, i wonder if they make those for dogs?

I think you baby must need some treats with all he is going through!!!

Oh poor Charlie...so sorry Donna, I'd missed this before :sl*p:

Can you get to Chris Day....there are ways of desensitising them with homoeopathy, and he might be able to make up a remedy from the steroid to help prevent side effects. If he can't, my homeoopath does this for me, it's really helped with TedBear.

Does James think he has SM as well, or "just" the allergies :yikes

You are so right about insurance...we weren't going to insure TedBear, but he had 6 weeks free from the Kennel Club {as he was under 2} and started scratching during that time...thank goodness we did, his bills to date have been over £1500 and he's currently on about £50 per month just in medication. ALthough like you, we'd starve before he'd go without icon_whistling

Jack is now insured with Marks and Spencers, have heard wonderful things about them...they are also substantially cheaper than the Kennel Club's own policy. If anyone is thinking of getting insurance, make sure you investigate thoroughly and get a policy that covers them for life, not jsut for a year...

On TV a long time ago, i saw a documentary about holistic medicine and there was a segment on homeopathy which reported on a man who became allergy free with homeopathci treatment, he was very happy about this because he lived on a large piece of land wiht lots of flowers and the garden used to make him sick but he loved i, and now he has no problem. They also had a segment on a controlled study of veterinary homeopathy, it was with cattle, in the UK, and they found that the cattle were substantially helped by the homeopathy, and this helped to address the criticism of placebo effect, as animals weren't considered subject to this.

Allergy would be something i would definitely try homeopathy for after seeing that documentary.

Amen to pet insurance. As i reported in another thread recently, Petcare quickly paid the first part of my claim for Zack's medical expenses from when he was protrated for three days and got those skin lesions, i submitted a claim for $259 and i got a check in less than a week, minus the $50 yearly deductable--pleasantly surprised and very pleased. I'm waiting to see what they do with the second claim i made which they received after they paid the first one. The vet assured me that if they don't pay it the first time, she will write more and they will pay it. I was worried because all she wrote down was "routine wellness exam."??? That was when he was anything but well and he had a not routine at all $180 blood test and subcutaneous fluids. But when i asked her about this, she said that it's best to write in general terms the first time you submit it because otherwise, the company may exclude things based on a more narrow description that should really be covered, so it's best to wait and let them ask for more if there's more that they need. so, i should hear something from the insurance company soon and will probably have to resubmit more info, but overall, their coverage seems to be as advertised, and very appreciated.

Thanks both. I have had computer problems so have been unable to answer until now.

Charlie's medication came in yesterday and he started it this morning. He is on an immune system suppressant :(

Anyway, all he did today was scratch but we'd had to bear with the treatment as the leaflet says that it will probably get worse before it gets better. Something is obviously working in there though as tonight he has been a different dog. He's even been up on the sofa pinning my youngest down and smothering him in kisses - he's never done that before! THEN he came and jumped on me and started kissing me, bless him. He hasn't scratched once since about 7pm and is now fast asleep. For the first time in ages he actually looks really comfortable :l*v:

Fingers crossed that this treatment works :xfngr: :xfngr: I just think he's been through enough already, bless him.

He has about 8 weeks of the immune suppressants and then he will start on immunotherapy injections every day for around 6 mths. If it works it'll be worth it :)

I've also managed to get a supply of Burns food and dog treats so that's all he'll be having from now on - and a little chicken or tuna occasionally!

I just can't believe the difference in him tonight, he's the happiest he's been since we've had him :D

So, thanks all for your concern and I will keep you updated if there's any change or news xxxxx

great report donna--how wonderful that he has gotten what he needs to be comfortable and happy! i know you are enjoying experiencing that and i'm so happy for you!

Thanks Judy,

Still no scratching :rah: His temperature has obviously gone down too as he isn't burning hot to tough today :rah:

I just hope this continues to work.

Oh how we love our Vet :flwr:

Yay for Charlie. Wonderful news. Nothing better than a finding the right course to make Charlie happy and comfortable.

Thanks Mary, we worry more about these litle angels than the rest of the family put together hahaha

Our fridge/freezer has broken down and we've been out today trying to buy a basic fridge until we can get the other one sorted.

We're so desperate for the fridge to put Charlie's medication in - never mind anything else  at the minute, my friend who lives opposite me has put it in her fridge for me, bless her :flwr:

Its great to hear Charlie is better!! Poor little love. :flwr: :flwr:

BTW slightly off topic but i have book Toby and Taffy into a new grooming parlor out Cropthorn way, they are both off there on Monday, will let you know the verdict. She came with excellent recommendations!
The woman on the phone was lovely, i told her about Tobys skin and she said she had loads of different shampoos we could try to try and elimate what is causing the problem PLUS she doesn't charge if you are late.

She wants the dogs in early because she wants to get the ok with the surroundings and the people. She is having a Cav day Monday as there are 10!!! booked in!! :yikes

Great news Donna, really pleased it's helping Charlie and he is obviously feeling better...perhpas you're seeing his real character now.

Keep us posted, sending healing thoughts and prayers for Charlie Farley, and big hugs for you all xxxx

Yeah, it's lovely to see his real self shining through - even if he did pee on the rug right inside the open patio door tonight

I thought we'd got him out of that but looks like it's back again - not listed as a side effect of the tablets either - just Charlie being Charlie

Sounds good Amy, a Cav day :D When the boys come back can you take and post some photo's? I'd love to see what they're like - both of mine could do with clipping as it's so hot. I did trim Maxx's feathering back a bit tonight as it's grown so long. then the little b****r went and stole his own reward - a piece of choc fudge that Geraint had left on the side table

Any idea how much this lady charges? I'll have all the details when you return. We won't be going back to Bettina again :yikes

Nicki,
